| | Glosta Harba is fine for flats.
Try launching your boat at the Glouster high school ramp. This is
on the Annisquam River which really isn't a river at all; but more
like a channel between Mass. Bay and Ipswitch Bay.

When you launch go under the bridge by the fisherman memorial (south)
being careful of the tide. follow the bouys out of the river and
head west about .5 nm .

If you have a depthsounder use it till you ping on the Muddy bottom
approx 20 to 30 ft depth.

I would float fish until I picked up a few flats and thn anchor
and chum with mussels and cracked or whole corn.

You should be able to pick up some clams or mussels at low tide.
down the other direction on the annisquam. Try around the power
    lines rail road track area.

I've heard that nightcrawlers also work well but can't prove it
    yet.

If you use small crappie jigs in chartouse or yellow the flats love
them,be sure to use light line 10lb or under and a fresh water rod
    for best results

| | I've fished Quincy in the past and it has the reputation as the
best spot on the East Coast. I do not go there any longer because
of the polution. Even the fish have cancer in Quincy Harbor. I
would be very careful about eating any fish from there.

| | I realy don't know much about flounder down here in Mass but up
in Eastport Maine where I come from we used catch them off the
warf by the sardine factory then get this we sold them for a
penny a pound to the fish factory and they chopped em up and
used em for bait. They were cnsidered a trash fish by all the
locals. Then again these people don't eat cod fish either. They
say cod is full of tiny worms.Eastport is located on Moose
island. The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway
it is the most northeastern seaport in the U.S.They have charter
boats and lodging all at very reasonable rates.Nice place
    for a vacation!!

| | This is only my second year of salt water fishing in Maine and
I was planning to try to locate some local (midcoast) flounder this
year. I was surprised to see the replies about Maine. Eastport is a
fair haul for me but I was wondering if anyone out there may have more
info about flounder spots in Maine closer to midcoast - say Belfast
    to Casco Bay.

| | I used to fish Hull/Quinsy area until about 10 years ago when they
had some major shit spills. Now we go to Buzzards bay down the
    cape.

There is a good town ramp and lots of bait stores. To find the
ramp go the old way into the cape. Just after the buzzards bay
sign you go over an inlet that is were there is a pay ramp, or go
further to the rotary and take the left at the gas station. There
    is a free town ramp.

When fishing goI like the flats just on the edge of the cannel
by the MASS MArtine school or just drive around and fins the flats
or sand bars. The fish are mush bigger and cleaner then the Hull
fish. The fishing can be slow. We get bait at the RED TOPPER
about 3 mi past the ramp.

    good luck

| | BOY, this is getting interesting. How about just outside the
MERRIMAC RIVER either in front of Plum Island or Salisbury Beach?

What about the Plymouth area and down the coast thru RHODY?

Looks like next weekend will my baptism. #1 son'll be home
from college and just looking to relax his brain.

the wind I will either fishing cod or flats this weekend. I will
report if I do going looking for flats.

| | NOW that everyone knows where to pick up flounder, is there a special
way to cleaning them up to ready them for a pan?? I've never kept'em
and never cut one down before, but will be at the cape the third
week in july, and do the blues have to be a min. of 30"??
    thanx for any info.

| 692.13 | How to fillet a flounder | 16BITS::LUCIA |  | Wed Jul 06 1988 11:47 | 14 |
| | Start with a very sharp slightly flexible knife of about 6 inches.
Make a cut in the skin (down to the bone) around the permiter of
the fish, about 1/4" from the edge (do this for both sides). Starting
at the tail end of the fish, hold the blade flat and slide it along
the bones in the middle of the fish, working your way towards the
head. Running lengthwise down the middle of the fish is the backbone
and you will have to lift the knife over this to continue the fillet
properly. (or you can simply make a cut along this bone and take
off four fillets instead of 2). To remove the skin from the fillet,
place skin down on a cutting board, slip the knife between the flesh
and the skin and holding the knife FLAT against the skin (or SLIGHTLY
angled up) work along the length of the fillet. A bit of skin is
    not a problem.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no minimum length for blues.
If there is, it definitely is less than 30".
