| | The only lake trout fishing I've done, was at the Quabbin res. We
used lead core line with shinners using a shiner rig, (most tackle
stores have them). The lead core line is an alternative to down
riggers and fish finders, though if I wasn't so cheap thats the way
I would go. When you fish for lakers at Quabbin, during the summer,
you have to troll on the bottom about 100ft. to 160 ft. down, to
get there you have to put out about 200yds. of lead core, which
is a *itch to handle. We used 20lb test mono. leaders about 9ft.
long. From my limited experience in lake trout fishing the important
thing is the temperature of the water. The warmer the water the
deeper they'll be, up north the water is colder so you probably
don't have to go down as deep. Lakers can go up to 40lbs at the
Quabbin, and I would guess their that size up north, so plan on
heavier equipment than what you would use for Horn Pout, or
    Brook Trout.

    Good Luck

| | Wayne, depending on the month, the Lakers will probably still be
near the surface, but any outfitter up there can tell you what to
expect. If you have to troll, buy a couple of luhr Jensen "Dipsy
Diver" trolling planers ($5-6) and screw the lead core. It's a pain
in the ass to use, kinks, and sometimes bellies up near the surface.
You don't know how deep you are, and it's limited in useful depth.
I'd bring several spools of 6# and 8# and a bunch of Blue Fox "pixie"
spoons in half oz. Also Krokodiles and Cleos in chrome, pearl,
    blue/chrome and green/chrome and, absolutely!! some brass/fluorescent
orange and brass/fluorescent red. Casting spoons should be 1/2 oz.
For trolling, some wafer types like "evil eyes", "alpena diamonds"
(blue/chrome, green/black), "stingers" and "sutton spoons" are all
    good.
Lakers have teeth, but it shouldn't be a problem with lures. Are
there any Arctic Char, up there ? If so, and you can fish for 'em,
    don't miss it.
Let me know if you need more info, and don't forget the polyprop
underwear and "gore-tex" and good (!!) bug dope. One last thought,
if you fish big Rapalas like you do at Dillon, I bet you'll kill
    'em.

    Best 'O Luck,

What are and how do these Dipsy Diver Trolling planers work ? I'd
like to can the lead core myself, but can I get to the bottom of
Quabbin at gate #8 with it ? Lead core is a pain, especially in
    areas with heavy traffic.

I saw the Dispy Divers used on a recent show of the Rod and Reel.
Seems like a good device for use on Quabin or Wallum when you
can't justify the cost of downriggers. I saw a similar device
in a BASS PRO catalog. Are you sure of the cost? I would expect
them to cost more like $20 to 30 bucks

| | At last recall, Zyla's had 'em, as does the rotary tackle shop
in Hudson, Mass. $5-6 is the correct price. With the Dipsy Divers
    you can troll right, left or straight back by setting the disk;
but the deeper you go (especially right/left) the more line you
need - ex. to go 40' down to the right, you might need 120' of line
out (this is a guess, the diver comes with a chart).
If anyone is interested, I have a copy of the Luhr Jensen test
report on fishing/using the Diver. one more thought about deep water
fishing - when I hear numbers like 120' down in fresh water (other
than the Great Lakes, I start thinking guys are fishing below the
thermocline, which means (ugh!) probably just lakers.

    In low tech and high,

| | Hey Bandit,

Your "right on" about Lakers!! Sure you don't fish Ontario?? My
problem is I throw them back because they taste too "fishey" and
we have a bunch of Browns, Salmon and Rainbows in the big "O". You
can always tell if you have a Laker on. Its like pulling up a log
that moves a little from side to side. I muck prefer a Salmon that
runs all over the surface and then trys to take your boat down with
him when you get it along side!! (Get the other lines in quick!)
