| | Is that "Poler Windlass" the type that jigs the bait if there is
wind? Arn't they about $13? I use the traditional tip-up in the
large (tall) size so that you can see the tip-up when there is a
lot of snow on the ice. Anyway, back to the line foo your rig. I
think mabee they want the line to be black absorb the suns rays
so you dont have a problem with freezing. I would think that if
it is real cold and you do try to rewind the line after it has been
dunked it would freeze. Let us know how you make out with that
    fancy unit.

| | I tried one of those high tech jiggers once, I didn't have much
luck, but they do work if the wind is right, it took me a while
to get it set right. I recommend the standard tip ups, I call them
"HIGH FLIERS" they have the words 40 UP on the flags. They work
great in deep snow and when you set them far apart (like I do).
They have some FREEZE PROOF line in the BP catalog, I got it on
my jiggin rod, it is plastic coated and it works, at least so far
    (2 years).
BTW Last saturday they got a 39 1/4" 18lb. PIKE out of the Quaboag
and I saw a 31" come out of Brimfield this saturday. Things are
    startin to pick up.

| | I don't have any personal experience with the Windlas traps
but last year I went to an ice fishing workshop at L.L. Beans and
the speaker didn't recommend them. He said they freeze up quite
often. ( Of course we were talking ice fishing in Maine. Freeze
up may be less of a problem in other states.)
I've had good luck with most other types including Continental,
Moosehead and Thompson. Polar traps(?) (H shaped plastic base with
spring based flag pole.) from the same company making the windlas
type are also good because of their light release but their low
profile is a draw back. My personal preference is for fairly tall
conventional traps (X shaped pieces across the hole with a vertical
piece holding the spool and flag.) in plastic. The flags are *BRIGHT*
dayglow orange and the plastic seems to hold up well in the cold.
The tallness and bright flag give excellent visibility.
Ice fishing is a good way to pass the Winter. Its kind of laid
back and you don't have to take it too seriously. I think you will
    like it.

I got one small Pike along with two pickerell (sp?) yesterday at
Echo Lake in northern RI. I did see a 10 pound pike taken also
by a guy fishing about 100 yrd from me. So I guess they are biting.

the wind can't blow them up?

If you have a problem with the wind. this trick is good to know.
Always determin the wind direction. Then place your tilt so the
wind blows the flag on the hook, peg or whatever it is on, insted

| | RE .9,

Bob, The name windless is a poor name for them. What they do
with the wind is jig you bait. There is a arm that moves up and
down in the wind, your line is attached the arm which intern jigs
your bait. Neat idea, but your spool is out of the water and there
are complaints about the line freezing.

Ok, now what is the deal with the smallies? How deep where you
fishing, and how big was the bait? If you dont mind that is. I never
did fish for them before. But I think I might give it a try at the
    local smallmouth pond.

THANKS FOR THE TIP BOB. RICH IS RIGHT. ACTUALLY THE THE NAME
IS "WINDLASS". IT DOES DEPEND ON WIND TO JIG FOR YOU. YOU CAN BEND
THE METAL "FLAG" TO INCREASE ACTION AND POSISTION AS DESIRED. IT
IS A NICE SUBSTITUTE FOR HAND JIGGING. ALSO IF YOU USE MINNOWS IT
KEEPS THEM ACTIVE AND NOT IN ONE SPOT. YOU CAN MAKE A RIG THAT CONSISTS
OF A SMALL PIECE OF WOOD WITH A PIECE OF PVC THROUGH IT THAT YOU
CAN FLOAT IN THE HOLE YOU CUT. POUR MINERAL OIL OR CORN OIL, ABOUT
2 CAP FULLS INTO THE SMALL PVC PIPE AND RUN YOUR LINE THROUGH IT.
THIS IS SUPPOSED TO STOP IT FROM FREEZING IF YOU HAVE THAT PROBLEM.
I HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM AS YET. I WONDER IF JUST ADDING SOME
OIL TO THE LINE ON THE SPOOL MIGHT WORK. REGARDLESS , IT'S A NEAT
WAY TO USE JIGS WITHOUT MUCH EFFORT ALONG WITH TRAPS RIGGED WITH
    SHINNERS.

Well we used smalls, med, med heavy and large, best results were
on the med. As for the depth we were running along an edge of a
drop off. The tilts on the top and just over seem to be the best.
The ones that were on the flat or in the deep caught mostly perch
and pickeral but the biggest smallie was caught in the deepest hole.

depth ranged from 10 feet on the flat to 10 at the end of the drop.

As for a place there is no public access, we had to cut throw this
3rd partys yard. They have a lot of problems with ice fisherman
so I was asked not to tell anyone. Sorry :^(

    .12> running flags

Well as your self one question what kind of fish am I fishing for,
those big pike that will not feel a little tap tap tap on the line
or trout that will drop the bait when it feels anything not normal?

I used to us running flags but stoped. We you fish for trout and
even bass the flag keeps putting the tripper back to the spool.
So as a fish pulls he gets a jerky tap tap tap as the spool turns.
I prefer a free spool with no resistance.

how deep the water was when there was no ice. It stays the same
during the winter. If you are going to someplace you never been
before, look at the lay of the land. If there is a hill at the edge
of the water, chances are that it drops off quickly. If the land
is flat then it is probably a gradual drop off. Have you invested
the 50 cents for a depth sounder yet? That will give an indication
on how deep it is and how quick it drops off.

I like to fish areas I have not been before and as you
well know the outside "lay of the land" is not always a good judge
of bottom structure. It acts as a good rule of thumb however.
It also is not uncommon for people who seriously ice fish
to use hand held depth finders. Read this months fishing facts.
They have a special section on ICE. I was curious if you found the

depthfinder from your boat with a 12 volt battery and set
the transducer in the water at a hole or you can take a
little anti-freeze and put a dab on the ice and your finder
can see right through. Many people use these for locating
perch and kivers also used for locating smelt schools to

I like to use 3' leaders and I seldom put more than 3' of line down

TBDW and I haven't set a meeting time yet. But I'm not that much
of an early riser, so 10:30 seems the earliest time to meet. Are
You familiar with the Hospital area? Thats where the salmon were
stocked, so I figure we should start setting up tilts within a 1/2
mile radius from the state (RI) access road that borders the north
    side of the hospital grounds.

It's suppoed to be close to 50 deg. this weekend :^) :^) :^)

| | Sorry I missed out on this one. I was out thurs and fri. How did
you make out? Its a little late but when ice fishing for BIG fish
the most important thing to do is keep your line in order when playing
the fish in. Its nice if your buddy (If you have one) keeps your
line in order while you play the fish. What you will find is the
fish will see the hole and decide that he is not going through it.
In the mean time he might take all the line you just pulled up plus
some. That can happen in a hurry so you need to be ready. If the
line gets stuck on the ice the mono will snap real quick.

Salmon will swim just under the ice and/or be suspended over a deep
    hole as mentioned before.

Oh BTW, if you happen to hook onto a salmon like TBDW did at wallum
you dont have to worry about all that line crap. They dont fight
    anyway. :-)

Question 1: When ice fishing for bass. Do bass tend to go into
the deeper water or do they stay in the shallows? (I.E. deep water
    = > 20ft, shallow = < 20 ft. very shallow = < 10 ft.

Question 2: Using the same depth rangers as above, how about
    lake trout?

    	Question 3a: How about cusk?

Question 3b: What bait is commonly used for cusk? Dead shiners,
cut pieces of fish (perch), worms, hot dogs, others....?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

Got skunked at Wallum Lake this past Sunday. That makes me 0 for
3 ( 2 times on water, 1 thru the ice) fishing for landlocked salmon
on Wallum 8*( . The ice was 12 to 16 inches thick and my new
10" hand auger made nice holes. Sunday was the warmest day if fished
    sinces Fall !

There were a lot of guys on the ice, but by mid-afternoon many were
leaving due to the slow action. A group of guys next to me had
21 tilts set up and I only saw them get 2 flags and 0 fish. One
guy leaving also said he got skunked, but his buddy got a nice
3 lb. brown trout earlier in the morning.

Had trouble with my shiners... they lasted about only 20 to 30 minutes
in the water and bellied-up on me. They were probably weak when
    I bought them.

    That's all for now.

I'm no expert on the kind of fishing that you are asking about
but since no one else has answered I'll try.

Cusk - Here in Maine Cusk fishing is done at night with dead
bait fished right on the bottom. I am told that they are scavengers
and will eat about anything, so maybe the hot dog is not too far
    fetched.

Bass - The little Bass fishing that I have done through the
ice seems to inicate that they like the edges and drop offs.I'd
guess most of my success has been in water between 10 & 20' deep.
I fish a few feet off the bottom. What I do if I am in a new area
is bring the kids so I can set up lots of traps. I then string the
traps out over a large area to determine whats happening. If I get
any action I concentrate on the productive areas.

Lake Trout - I think they are found in deep water near the bottom
    even in the winter.

As I stated this is not my area of expertice, but I think the
info is not too far off. Hope this helps.

| | Thanks re.-1.

Any hints are helpful at this point. Since I'll be
fishing on a lake trout lake, I'll only have two tip ups in use.
I want to make the best guess placement as I can. I done want to
    be skunked the whole weekend.

Are there any other volunteers for hints on this subject?

|  |     Ed, There is some good info in note 528. In addition to that;
Depending upon the time of year the Lakers could be at differant
depths. As it is getting nearer to ice out the lakers start getting
up off the bottom, well not all of them. Your in a tuff situation
with only 2 tip-ups, but to make the best of them see how your
neighbors are doing and at what depth their getting them if they
are getting them. Dont be afraid to move to a new location if the
one your using does not produce. The best bait(s) for Lakers are
smelt #1 and suckers #2. You might even want to try dead bait. A
laker dont want to work to hard to get the bait.

Hope that was of some help

| |
FWIW - I was up at the Winni Derby this weekend and fished at
various depths for Lake Trout. The only luck I had was at about
75-80 ft. I tried from 35-80 ft and only had strikes on the deeper
holes. As for my luck, I only caught 3 lakers, all of them under 18
inches. But I didn't see anyone around me Sat or Sunday catch a fish.
I was using smelt on 6-8 ft 15lb mono leaders, 2 ft off the bottom.
I tried Meredith bay and just off Rattlesnake Island.
The reason I use 15lb leaders is last year with an 8lb leader I had
a large fish break off near the hole. (don't we all :-))

| 574.50 | Auger Decisions | CASV05::PRESTON | Better AI than none at all | Mon Dec 05 1988 12:35 | 33 |
| | Gentlemen (who, us? yeah, you!), I have just been told by a family
member that I will be given $50 to buy myself a nice ice-auger as a
Christmas present! Well, looks like I'm almost in business, eh?

Of course, the question that remains is, which one to buy? My
impression is that Mora makes about the best (lets face it, those
Swedes build good stuff), and I've found a place that has a couple
    of 8" and one 10". The 8's are $47.95 and the 10 is $49.95. Do I
get the 10" because it's a good deal (only 2 bucks more) or do I
get an 8" because drilling with a 10" requires Arnold Schwartzenegger
    on the other end?

Bass Pro sells 6" and 7" augers for only $29.95, but one of you
guys said at one time that less than 8" is too small (oh brother,
I'm glad nightee is gone..!) Anyhow, for the price of the Bass Pro
auger, I can get an ice chisel, too.

The big decision is: Do I get a possibly too small Bass Pro auger
with an ice chisel, or quit being a chiseller and get the more
expensive Mora (good Swedish steel) and if so, the 8" or the 10"?
(I'm not exactly Arnold, but I'm 6' 195lb, so probably *could* turn
a 10" auger well enough - famous last words??)

So, all suggestions and advice gratefully received (but hurry, I
    want to be READY!!)

    Thanks,

Seargeant Preston of the Frozen North...

| | I'd hate to have to have to manually crank a 10"er through real thick
ice... I went with a small one last year, it's either 6 or 8" Mora
(don't recall the exact size at the moment) - for the ice fishing
that I do it's fine. However most of my ice fishing consists or
perch jerkin and smelting. If your after big northerns, then you
may want a 10 incher. (or better yet a big gas job!)
