| Welcome aboard Al...
Personally, I have never fished the Nashua River in NH, and have
only fished it once in MA. But, I understand that it does offer a
good bass fishery in both states. I meant to launch in Nashua this
past season, but never got around to it.
Also, there is no need to despair, there are many bass here over 9"!
In the last couple of years many of us in here (from NH) have caught
5+ pounders and a few of us have caught 6+ pounders (this year I was
even fortunate enough to catch and release a 24" 7.5lb pounder)...
So, there out there, go get `em -- and keep releasing them!

I am afraid that I know too well how to catch little itty bitty bass
(and perch and pikerel and...). There is nothing better than catching
good fish, but it sure is nice to have a good friend in the boat
when you're not! I have found the majority of bass fishermen
to be worthy of having along on a slow day.
I did a lot of fishing with a Mr. D. Rought this summer, and we
both had a wonderful time laughing at ourselves and what we didn't
catch! He finally got me to read this notes file (I was just lazy),
and I am glad he did. Dave, are you out there (he follows the notes
file but I haven't seen an official entry!) ???
Well, I have digressed! Sorry. The Nashua River...oh yes...
I caught two of the three 2.5-3.5 pounders behind the now defunct
Mill Yard. There is a nice boat entry beside the old dock for the
ferry. Never fished down stream towards the bridges. Maybe next
summer. It is fairly peaceful in the mornings. There was one that
got away! He broke water 3 feet from the boat and scared me to
death, not to mention shaking the hook. It was the most beautiful
fish I ever lost. Must have been a good 5 lbs....(we all know how
accurate these sightings are!!!!).
The third 3+ pounder (I had gotten a de-liar by this point) was taken
down river from the 111-A/111 bridge. I had lost so many because of
not setting the hook that I kept cranking on him until my partner
encouraged me (that's saying it nice!) to let off! This one didn't
shake the hook!
Over all, a very nice experience. Especially for one who hasn't
caught many NICE fish. This sport just keeps 'em comming back.
It is tough to be responsible and balanced all the time; it's nice
to be obsessed in the warmest part of the year.

| I haven't fished the Nashua River myself yet but I have heard of
some large bass being caught there. Stories of bass to 10 lbs.
arise every year from the Nashua. There has been a project on over
the past few years to reclaim the river. It was badly polluted
and the fish caught there still can't be eaten. However it has
been cleaned up quite a bit and the fishing remains very good.
I hope to get a chance to try the Nashua out this year.

Welcome, Al. I am also a re-beginning fisherman as of this year.
All I used to know was hook a worm and throw it out with a bobber
on the line - but that was a long time ago.
I agree, re-discovering fishing is a blast, and hooking a real
live bass is an "experience". I have probably not done a lot of
fishing compared to others this year - I didn't even start until
August, and that was just for perch. After I discovered this
file, I caught on fast, though! I caught a 13" smallmouth on a
hula popper in September, and an 18" smallmouth on a rubber worm
in November, all off a dock at Paugus Bay, Lake Winnepesaukee.
By all means try top-water lures like the hula popper - its a
real rush to see them take it, then jump right out of the water
trying to shake it off!
I agree with your "analysis" of the fascination of fishing. Somewhere
between buying the stuff, talking about it, planning for it, and
occasionally actually catching a fish, lies the real fun of fishing.
(Plus it gets your mind off all this "computer stuff"...)
I've got to get one of those "de-liars" too. That last smallmouth
I caught was awful fat - some people told me it was as big as they
get in that area, and I can only guess at the weight - and we all
know... that's a no-no!!! (I *do* have a picture, though!) *and*
I let him go, too, so I might get another chance to weigh him
after all!

| Al, welcome aboard!
I have been fishing the Nashua in the Pepperell area for the last
two years. Started fishing fresh water again after a long layoff
about three years ago. Now the majority of my fishing is done in
the Nashua. I am not at the level of mastery that some have in this
file. But each year I am improving, some of my improvement is a
direct result of the info put in this file.
I will keep this message short because I am short on time, but I
did want to make a reply.
In my opinion the river is totally underfished. That is based on
my observations both in Mass. and N.H.. Part of the reason is poor
access. There are big fish in the river down my way. My best is
about four pounds. But I have spoken to others who fish it and there
are some great stories. I have seen bass landed in the 5+ range
and have seen some fish that looked bigger. I am not suprised to
hear of your success. The fishing in Peperell is different than
in N.H., or at least I think it is, because there is a dam and the
fishing is certainly affected by it. I would not eat a fish out
of the river! The big fish all have a growth (bacteria)on them which
I understand is from the water condition. Much has been done in the
past five years or so to clean it up(according to local fisherman and
tackle shop).
I'll follow-up with you after the holidays with some more info.

| Jim, Clarks has one listed in Nashua... The one that I used in Mass
was where the river croses 119 - going East, take the first left
after the bridge, then your next first left, this brings you right
down to the river where there is 2 launches, both dirt, not too
good, but I've seen people launch 17'ters there...

| As far as all the access points that I know of, all of them are
recorded in Clark's New Hampshire Fishing Guide (I think that is
all the correct title information - its close if not). This is
a pretty fine guide to tons of little and large bass fisheries.
In it, you can find directions to all the Nashua River public access
points.
Here is an undetailed description of where I have gotten in:
The best access is behind the now defunct Mill Yard shoping area
in downtown Nashua. Some good fishing in this part of the river
despite its proximity to the population.
The second access is at the 111-111a bridge. There is a parking area
on the north west side of the bridge and a trail down to the river.
There is also a 4x4 path down to the river (bout 200 yards long - if
that) about 100 yards north (on the right of course) from the car park.
If you don't want to drive down the path, it is an easy portage
and a good entry point for canoes.
All my Nashua river fishing has been from these two points and I
have caught all my fish in these parts of the river. There is another
public entry point on the west side of the river around exit 6,
but I have never tried it. I will, though!

| A couple of years ago a lady here showed me a picture of the Rainbow
trout her 12 year old son caught in the Nashua River. I couldn't
beleive it. I forget what exactly it weighed, but it was between
5 and 6 pounds!
It seems the boy had been fishing every afternoon. He'd come home
every day and say he missed a huge fish. His folks would just say
'yea, sure you did' until he brought it home....

| I have fished the Nashua river in Nashua, and at a nicer area than
downtown. Here's how to get there. Take exit 6 off of route 3 and
go west (past the Nashua Mall). You are now traveling west on rte
130. Take a left on any street by the Country Motel (preferably
the one right after the motel). Go about three blocks and take a
right. Your next left is Winchester street. This is the street that
the ramp is on. The ramp is at the end of this street on the dirt
part. My suggestion is that you go upriver (to the right) when you
launch. There is a lot of slow water and shallows and weedbeds this
way about 3/4 of a mile. I have only had sporadic luck here (having
fished it once last fall), but the yocals pull a lot of large bass
out of here. It's considerably more picturesque than the downtown
locations; especially during the fall. It's also a good place to
go canoeing.

ps The water still is not clean enough to allow eating the fish
in the river but the return of great blue heron is encouraging.

| I have been on the Nashua River from the previously described location
every week for the last 6 weeks.
FIshing is getting better there every week. Yesterday I got 9 in
2 hours ranging from an 18" pickerel to a couple of sunfish.

| last sunday the current was so slow that the almost non-existant
breeze was blowing us up stream.
The surface was flat calm.
River level is high, though I cannot qualify this as this year is
my first on the river.

| Last night I went looking for the boat ramp to the section of the
Nashua River below
ine Falls Dam and above the Library Dam (the section by the Mill
Yard).
The Mill Yard, mentioned in an earlier note did not appear to have
a ramp and has big gates which appear to get locked.
Does anyone know of a ramp on this section of river???
