    	This time of year is tough.....but I've found the best way is
    to keep the water cool by throwing in some ice....once you get to
    your fishin hole change the water often.....

    Also...make sure you don't overcrowd them....i.e. too many in the
    bucket as they compete for oxygen.  I've seen little battery operated
    aeraters for under $5 that will certainly help.  And like Denny
    said, ice does a lot to cool things down.

    Once I get to the fishin spot,I put my baitfish in a [shinner trap]
    With the hole closed off,and dangle it from the side of my canoe.
    But it's the ride in the pail...no oxygen...I've thought of having
    my girlfriend use a hand pump,with a fish tank tube on it,and give
    the little suckers artificial resparation.
    
    Are there any kind of oxygen tablets,like Alka Seltzer type things
    that will produce oxygen?

    There are things called air tabs which airate the water .
    

    	There are a number of products available that not only provide
    oxygen but tranqualize the fish so that they don't need as much.
    A product called Catch n' Release rings a bell.

    The local bait shop adds a capful of something to the shiner water
    that seems to enhance preservation; slows metabolism or something.
    I'll ask next time what it is.

    There is a product called BAIT SAVER which is made by the same people
    who sell CATCH AND RELEASE.
    

    There is a product called Otabs(I think). It is a small metal container
    that is sealed. You pry off the top and drop the base in the bucket.
    When done with it, put the top back on for another day. It costs,
    if I remember about 75 cents to a dollar. I have seen them recently
    at the Outdoor Store in Maynard. I orginally purchased one at the
    tackle store in Hudson Ma. by the fire station.

    I heard that BUCKETMOUTH used to use live shiners. He put them in
    a minnow bucket. Then put the minnow bucket in an ice filled 5-gallon
    plastic bucket. Then he covered them both with wet burlap. It works
    great.

                         Otabs Keepem Alive And Kicking
    
        Otabs work very well. I kept a dozen shinners alive overnight
      in a five gallon pail with two tabs. The first went in about 11:00
      P.M. the second around 5:00 A.M. after changing the water just
      before leaving. The shinners survived the trip and were still
      very lively. Most bait shops sell Otabs or something similar.  

    
    One way to keep shiners alive is to leave them in the water and buy
    one of those balsa wood models.  They also come in plastic and in
    a variety of colors.  Colors that even the live ones can't possibly
    imagine.

    Field and Stream Aug. 1987 Tips Tips:
    
    	Place a plastic bag of ice, with holes poked in the bottom of
    it, on top of your minnow pail. As the ice melts the cold water
    will drip into the minnow pail keeping your bait active longer.
