    SHAD
    
    Because of the underwhelming request for the stats, here goes!
    So we take off early sat AM.  We finnally get a line in the water
    at about nine.  Now understand I'm with "better late than nnever
    WATT"  We were supposed to meet Ranger Ron at the Launch at 11 or
    12.  Remember that that's the earliest RR will start out unless
    it's tourney time.  Even then he over sleeps most of the time.
    We came equiped with pckets full of Shad darts.  The water is way
    down and nobody is catching Fish.  We finally made it to the other
    side of the river, at the mouth of one of the tailgates and the
    fish are sooo think that it looks as though you could walk across
    thier backs.  We couldn't stop catchin them.  
    After we ran out of shad darts, (we not only lost all the darts
    we brought we bought more from a guy set up at the road making and
    selling his own - 40 centa a piece  Dicks was 65 cents).
    We found out on the way back to the car that the utility company
    was holding a DERBY. 
    We signed up then weighed up and to my surprise, My fish came in
    at 6.5 I didn't think it was all that big a deal, but it did put
    me in the running.  First place was 7.1
    
    I was using a light rig with 4# test and it was FUN.  
    
    The compitition runs through next weekend and if I can get out,
    I will use a bigger/heavier rig and compete!

	ALSO! We toured the fish elavator that carries the fish up and over the dam. we saw a few salmon and lots of LAMPRY not to mention tons of herring. They have installed a viewing window at the top so you can watch the fish as they are dumped over the dam to continue there run up stream.

	Love those Lamprey! Why can't they cull the eels and keep the fish. I fished the "Lamprey" River one season and the eels were all over the place. UGLY They drill into fish don't they? Parasites!!! What good are they?

	fished the Conn. R. below Holyoak all day Fri. on our way to Riverside Park... Couldn't stop catching them...even hooked a few on the back on the retrieve!!! There were soooo many of them in there jl

	I suppose we can close out SHAD for this year. My wife rec'd a call from the sponsors of the holyoke derby to tell her that out of the several hundred thousand entrants, Mr. Wiersum Placed seventh. I am not sure but I think The prize is a new tackle box full of stuff and perhaps several gold bars. Watchin the mail and waitin till next years run Mr. Wiersum

	The shad fishing in the Pacific Northwest is just beginning to go into full swing. I was out this weekend on the Umpqua and landed 37 fish. What a blast. I was using a white shad dart with the tail cut back to the hook. We were trolling down river until we ran out of the hole and then turned on the main motor and ran back up. For some reason they would only bite on the downhill run. On the Columbia and Willamette, they form up in big "hog lines" and just sit. They seem to be doing all right using that technique, but I wonder.... Maybe I'll try my way. Ken Ocean salmoning opens next weekend
