| |
I'VE BEEN TO THE BIG "O" THE LAST THREE SPRINGS.THE FIRST YEAR WE
RENTED A CHARTER ON FRIDAY,AND ONLY CAUGHT SIX FISH (THREE BROWNS,THREE
LAKERS).I FIGURED AFTER THE CHARTER EXCURSION WE WOULD BE OLD PRO'S
ON WHAT TO USE AND WHERE TO FISH THEM.WE STAYED AND EXTRA DAY TO
FISH SATURDAY OUT OF MY 12 FOOT ALUMINUM BOAT WITH A 10 HORSE.NOT
MUCH OF A FISHING BOAT TO FLAT LINE WITH ON THE BIG "O" BUT IT STILL
PRODUCED.WE CAUGHT THE SAME AMOUNT OUT OF MY TWELVE FOOTER AS WE
DID ON THE CHARTER!!!( LOT CHEEPER TOO) THREE AND THREE!!
JUST GOES TO SHOW WHAT A LITTLE DETERMINATION WILL GET YOU.I WOULDN'T
RECOMMEND TO ANYONE THAT COULDN'T SWIM TO BE OUT THERE IN A TWELVE
FOOTER,BUT SPRING TIME YOU FISH SO CLOSE TO SHORE YOU COULD STAND
UP ON BOTTOM IF ANYTHING SHOULD HAPPEN!!!
BACK TO FISHING ANYWAY.THERE'S ABOUT 10 OF US HEADING OVER THE
LAST WEEK OF APRIL.WE'RE ALL RENTING CABINS ON SANDY POND FOR A
WEEK.IT'S NOTHING TO BOAT 20-25 "FOOTBALL" BROWNS ON A GOOD DAY
BEFORE NOON.I'VE FOUND THAT BETWEEN 10AM AND 2PM THE ACTION SEEMS
TO SLOW DOWN.WE USUALLY COME IN AROUND NOON FOR A FEW HOURS,THEN
CATCH THE LAST THREE OR FOUR HOURS OF THE AFTERNOON.SURFACE RUNNING
LURES IN THE SPRING DO THE TRICK (REBELS,RAPALAS,BOMBERS).CHARTRUESE,
GREEN SEEM TO BE THE COLORS LAST YEAR.WE DIDN'T SEEM TO HAVE MUCH
LUCK FLAT LINING RIGHT STRAIT OUT THE BACK OF THE BOAT.ALL OUR FISH
WERE CAUGHT OFF THE PLAINING BOARDS.
IF YOU SHOULD EVER GET SICK OF CATCHING BROWNS AND LAKERS,YOU CAN
ALWAYS HEAD OUT TO DEEPER WATER (SIX OR SEVEN MILES) TO TRY TO LOCATE
THE THERMALCLINE FOR STEELHEAD.(SOME KIND OF THERMOMETER REQUIRED)
NO PLACE TO BE UNLESS YOUR BOAT IS EQUIPPED FOR IT,NOTHING I'D
TRY OUT OF MY TWELVE FOOTER!!!!!!!!!!!

IF ANYONE IS AROUND THE SANDY POND AREA THAT TIME FRAME,AND HAS
A VHF RADIO GIVE A SHOUT TO:
                                REDEYE
                                SWAMPMAN
                                REELDREAM
        WE'LL BE THERE!!!!!!!

                                                  GOOD FISHING
                                                        THE REDEYE

DUNCAN, YOU MENTIONED IN YOUR NOTE THE FIRST TIME OUT YOU WENT
OUT ON A CHARTER DO YOU HAPPEN TO REMEMBER WHO IT WAS WITH?
ALSO WHERE DID YOU GO OUTTA, WAS THERE ANY SIZE TO THE FISH?
COULD YOU RECOMMEND ANY SPOTS WE COULD TRY FROM SHORE AS OUR
CHARTERS ARE FOR ONLY 6 HRS, WE;D LIKE TO TRY SOME SHORE FISHING
WHEN WHERE NOT ON THE BOAT.

      YEY MIKE,
WE CHARTERED OUT OF A TOWN CALLED PULTNEYVILLE,IT'S ABOUT HALF
WAY BETWEEN ROCHESTER AND PULASKI.OUR CHARTER CAPTAINS NAME WAS
RANDY VERDOW,I NO LONGER HAVE HIS PHONE NUMBER.I'M SURE INFORMATION
CAN PROBABLY GET IT FOR YOU.THE BROWNS AVERAGE BETWEEN 6-8 POUNDS
BUT NOT UNCOMMON TO PICK ONE UP IN THE TEENS.LAST YEAR ONE OF THE
GUYS WE WERE WITH CAUGHT A 13 POUNDER,AND ANOTHER GUY GOT A 21
POUNDER.THE LAKERS AVEERAGE AROUND 6-8 POUNDS ALSO,WITH AN OCCASIONAL
     ONE IN THE TEENS.
I NO LONGER FISH OUT OF PULTNEYVILLE BECAUSE IT'S AN EXTRA 100
MILES OR SO.LAST SPRING WE WENT OVER TO PULASKI TO FISH THE SALMON
RIVER FOR STEELHEAD.WE DIDN'T CATCH STEELIES SO I TRIED TO TALK
THE BOYS INTO FISHING OFF THE CEMENT DOCK AT SELKIRK SHORES STATE
     PARK.NOTHING DOING THOUGH,NOT TRUE STEELIE FISHERMAN.ABOUT A WEEK
LATER AT WORK WE HEARD THAT THEY HAMMERED THE BROWNS RIGHT OFF
THE DOCK THAT SAME WEEKEND.I DON'T KNOW WHERE YOUR CHARTER IS OUT
IS SELKIRK STATE PARK COULD BE A LONG WAY TO DRIVE.IT'S ABOUT 2
MILES WEST OF THE MOUTH OF THE SALMON RIVER.IF YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR
CHARTER YET YOU COULD GET HOLD OF LINDA GREENNOUGH AT GREEN POINT
MARINA(SANDY POND).SHE COULD FIX YOU UP WITH A CHARTER SERVICE
(318-387-3513).IT'S ABOUT 15 MILE FROM SELKIRK STATE PARK.

HOPE THIS HAS BEEN A HELP

| | KEVIN,

OUR CHARTER IS OUT OF LITTLE SALMON RIVER. SOUNDS LIKE YOU
GUYS HAD A GOOD TIME. WHAT TYPE OF LURES DID YOU USE FROM THE SHORE
BECAUSE WE PLAN ON FISHING FROM THE SHORE WHEN NOT ON THE BOAT.
OUR CHARTER IS BOOKED FROM MAY 9TH AND 10TH. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY
"HOT" SPOT IN THE VICINITY OF LITTLE SALMON RIVER IT'S IN NEW
MEXICO NEW YORK? I APOLOGIZE FOR GETTING YOUR NAME WRONG IN MY
LAST REPLY. THANK'S FOR ALL THE INFO YOU'VE BEEN A BIG HELP.

                                                THANK'S AGAIN

   MIKE,
SELKIRK STATE PARK IS RIGHT IN MEXICO BAY.IF YOUR CHARTERING OUT
THE SALMON RIVER,THE STATE PARK WILL BE TO YOUR RIGHT ABOUT A MILE
DOWN.YOU WILL SEE THE CEMENT DOCK WHEN YOU TROLL BY.I'VE NEVER FISHED
FROM SHORE,ALL I HAVE HEARD IS TALK ABOUT PEOPLE CATCHING BROWNS
OFF THE PIER AT THE STATE PARK.AS FAR AS LURES GO FROM SHORE I WOULD
IMAGINE THAT THE HEAVIER THE BETTER (SPOONS),SO YOU CAN CAST THEM OUT
    FARTHER.

Lake Ontario Health advisory
Eat none - lake trout , chinook salmon , coho salmon over 21"
           rainbow trout over 25"
           brown trout over 18"
Eat only one meal a month any of the above below that measurement
The lake has some of the best fishing in the Northeast from March - May
and October-? most anything(trout) can be caught from shore . Mostly in the
A.M. . I've caught may 3-5 lbs. Lakers and browns from shore and the
occasional salmon or rainbow . Best is October-November for steel heads and
salmon . From shore try wading in ( what a way to wake up !) and casting
3/4 oz celo's silver or combo's of green blue and red with silver work fine

On charters be prepared to pay big time for the charter service most run
about $200-400 a day !
I've never dealt with any of the below but you may want to give them a call
most sail out of the Rochester N.Y. area when I get home I'll see if I
still have my East shore directory.

The recommendations are from the New York Department of Health (DOH)
The DOH has a great bunch of people using D.E.C. systems to figure
    this kind of stuff out...

The main reason is lake ontario is the reciver of wather from the
Niagara river which has a large population of chemical compinies
.Which in the 40's thu 70's dumped tons of PCB's mirex and other
good stuff into the river and leach fields which drained into the
lake . ( ever hear of love canal ? ) . PCB's are heavey and settle
to the bottom as most trout when in the lake are bottom feaders
they eat enough of the stuff to glow when they get bigger .
The PCB's settle into the fatty flesh and donot disipate much .

The new recommendations for waters in New York have doubled in the
past year alone . And the problem isn't getting better as the PCB's
even though they disipate in sunlight don't get much (sun) at the
    bottom .

I picked up a magazine last week that had an article on fishing
Lake Ontario and listed guide services and campgrounds and such.
The magazine is an annual, the title is Upland Fishing I think.
It deals exclusively with NY and New England, focussing on local
fish, techniques and waters. I think most of y'all would find it
    useful.

| | While we seem to be on the subject of the ESLO Derbies here, I thought
that I would you all a short story. During the time of the 86 summer
brown trout derby a party of 4 from the Leominster/Gardner area
treked fourth to the big "O". They really didn't think they had
a chance in the derby so they opted not to enter. Wouldn't you know
it, one of those guys caught a new NY State record brown, 29lbs
15ozs. Granted he received all the press for a new record including
a picture in the Oct.86 issue of Outdoor Life as well as the ESLO
derby gazette. But he could have had himself a beautifull new fishing
    rig!

You just never know what your chances are... If any of you go in
87, I strongly suggest you give the derby some serious thought!!!

I also have entry blanks and the rules for anyone interested. The
charter I have booked my trips for this year is Hi-Line Charters
out of Sodus Bay, and the campground I use is Idlewood-on-the-lake.
The campground is about 1.5mi from the dock, Hahers bait shop and
official weigh station is right there and they also have a boat
ramp for those of you who might want to bring your own. I have all
the pricing info and phone numbers for those of you that are
    interested.

One last thing and then I'll shut up. A good source for charter
info will be the fishing expo in Springfield, at the BIG "E"
fairgrounds. This show is sometime in March. Maybe one of you fellow
"BIG O" fishermen could help me out with the exact dates for this
    one???????

| | REDEYE,
I'M GOING TO HAUL THE BOAT OUT AND GIVE THE LAKE A TRY WEATHER
PERMITING. IF NOT IN THE RIVER WE GO. I HEAR OVER BY OSWEGO,THEY
HAVE A LARGE BREAKWATER SO IF THE LAKE IS ROUGH YOU CAN STILL GET
    SOME GOOD FISHING IN THERE.
BY THE WAY, CAN YOU SEE IF YOU CAN FIND A GOOD PRICE ON A LOWERANCE
X5 LIQUID DISPLAY. THE BEST I FOUND SO FAR WAS $425 WITHOUT THE
    TRANSDUCER.

Personally wading in from shore casting 1/4-3/4 oz spoons
and triple jointed Reppla's got 2 nice lakes 24 and 28 inches (released)

| | Went to Ontario April 15-17 for the first time, I will be going
back. Fished out of the New Haven (little sodus bay) area and
we got 9 fish. 7 browns, 1 chinook and 1 coho. The browns were
all in the 4-8 lb. area and the largest salmon was 12 1/2 lbs.
This trip was mainly a learning experience but I'm hooked on
fishing Lake Ontario. Already started planning next years trip.
