| | Just thought that I would throw in my 2 cents worth. I fished Moosehead
last year around that time. There are a string of cabins available
and plenty of places to rent boats. When you hit Greenville bear
    left along the lake.

When your there, try the Moose River... I pulled an 18" Brookie
out last year. There are also Salmon... Artificial lures only on
the river. If you fly fish any of the standard streamers work....
    Try a Black Maribou......

    Good luck

| | All you Moosehead fishers,I'm heading up to Great Pond (some Indian
name no doubt) outside of Waterville for a long July 4 weekend/fishin'
excursion. Any advice as to particular "Maine" techniques/gear? As I
understand,it's loaded with all sorts of fish,Bass included, and clear
and about 8 miles long. My first time there. I'm gonna take my Shimano
and 8# and 12# spools, the usual Bass and trout stuff. Any unique bait/
gear?

FIRST...learn which end of the rod to hold...then replace the kite
    string with mono!

| | Great Pond is in Belgrade Lakes/Simthfield/near Waterville area.
It is a great landlocked salmon pond. Trolling is the generally
accepted method of catching them. Nearby you will find Long Pond
(also good for brookies and salmon) and Messalonski (snow pond)
which is also good for pickrel, salmon, brook trout, bass, perch. All
of these ponds are the "Belgrade Lakes", good fishing just 10 miles
from the Augusta Plant. Enjoy it while you're up, the fishing should
    be good.

| | also in great pond dumped by accident is the famous junk fish
"NORTHERN PIKE". People have been catching these fish with some
size to them. Great Pond is a real pretty lake but be careful
driving your boat around there are plenty of hazards.

While we're talking about Maine lakes, has anyone ever been
to Lake Pemmaquid? It's near Boothebay Harbor. I'm going up there
the end of the month and wondered how the fishing is. I'm fairly
new to the sport and would appreciate any advice anyone has to give.

-< OTHER GREAT POND FISHIES >-
Jeez, thanks for the tips you Maniacs.
I think I'll bring some heavier stuff.
NORTHERN PIKE? SALMON?
A speargun anyone?
Sounds like minnow potential..any regulations?

I WOULD "bring some heavier stuff", the northern can run over 10
lb from what I understand.....up to 18 I think was the largest.
I would want to get right up in the weeds for the northerns, somewhere
where there are large weedbeds near to deep water.......try a Johnson
silver minnow with a pork frog trailer.

Try your luck fishing around Hoyte Island in the deeper water, shiners
would do if your interested in bait fishing, smelt are better for
salmon. You might try trolling wobbler type lures as well for salmon.

BASS, has it got bass......bass all over the place....try the south
end, launching at the Belgrade stream launch....go out thru the
channel and cut around the bar to the left....theres a long bay
bordering the railroad tracks, lots of lilies and weed as well
as a bottom filled with nice stumps and such....work the stucture
and you'll catch bass.....also the stream itself can be good for
bass. These two area's are also good for topwater "jitterbugging"
as well toward evening and after dark......extend your fishing
by fishing late evening until about ten.

BE CAREFUL....as Froggy said..these ponds are full of "propeaters"
nice big rocks, boulders and bars all waiting for your lower unit!

                                       Enjoy and tight lines

                                             Ed

There are more ponds and area's to fish in the local than you will
possibly get two in a long weekend...but wherever you go there should
    be some good fishing.

| 15.12 | Great Pond -aptly named | ASGMKA::FLETCHER | Bass_Buster_Fletch | Mon Jul 07 1986 09:35 | 18 |
| | Well, all you mainiacs, the weekend was great in spite of spotty weather.
It turns out we were at the northern end of Great Pond and my canoe
and Merc Thruster were our only mode of transport(the promised boat
hit some rocks a couple of weeks before...just like you guys said
not to...) BUT,I got over into the weeds on the northeast end and
promptly got dragged around by a 4-5+ lb pickeral(Pike?-I couldn't
tell the difference in the 3 minutes I wrestled with him). The weekend
went like that-six feet of rocket after my rubber worm- BLAM and
then wrestling matches...I finally got smart Sunday and started
to fish the deeper water around the island off Jamaica Point and
JEEZ you guys have nice bass...Again a purple worm off the bottom
and 4+pounds of HEAVY bass ...Enough to tire a guy out...
I see what amazing fishing you could have with a REAL boat. HEY
DON MAC,how much was that John boat?
The Loons are all over the lake-a good sign in my book-clear water
    and good country.
Thanks for the fun...think I'l go back...
