Well, ahhhhhhh, old Mr. Worm fished off the bottom. I also understand the
Pickerel are active in the Assabet River, as it courses through Stow (MA).
I haven't any further stocking reports but things will pick up quickly now
that the ice is really out.

| | THOUGHT I WOULD SCRATCH A NOTE TO SEE IF ANYONE USES CORN FOR RAINBOWS?
LOCATED ABOUT 50 MILES FROM OTTAWA WE HAVE A LAKE WE CALL NO-NAME
TO PROTECT THE OVER CURIOUS.THE LAKE IS POLLUTED WITH RAINBOWS
AVERAGING 4-7 LBS MUCH DO TO THE FACT THAT IT IS AN HOUR AND A HALF
WALK (NO EXAGERATION) TO GET THERE.
WE BRING GREEN GIANT CORN NIBLETS AND WORMS.STILL FISHING IN 30
FEET OF WATER SEEMS TO BRING THE BEST RESULTS.CHUM THE WATER WITH
ABOUT HALF A CAN OF CORN AND PLACE A COUPLE OF NIBLETS AND A WORM
ON A # 8 BEAK HOOK (VERY SMALL) AND WAIT.
THIS LONG WEEKEND 3 OF US CAUGHT 15 RAINBOWS,THE SMALLEST WAS 3.5
LBS AND THE LARGER WAS 7.5 LBS WITH A LARGE KIPE TO BOOT.
IF THE RAINBOWS ARE HATCHERY SUPPLIED THEY HAVE EITHER BEEN FED
CORN OR LIVER PELLETS FOR FOOD.EACH FISH HAD SEVERAL HUNDRED NIBLETS
IN THEM WHEN THEY WERE CLEANED.

TRY THIS METHOD FOR SOMETHING RADICALLLY DIFFERANT.
WE TRIED IT BY CHANCE AND NOW IT IS ALL WE USE,WE TAKE ON AVERAGE
4-6 FISH HOME EACH WEEKEND ON THIS METHOD.

    GOOD LUCK

| | Sean,
    Nice fish!
    What's a 'kipe'?
If you're fishing 30' of water does this mean you've got a boat or
canoe stashed away 'up there'?
Is the walk a woods hike, foot path, old loging road or what?
Do tell more (all) ..... I'm addicted to Trout fishing and there's
nothing makes a Monday morning better than a GOOD fish story!

What's chum(ming)..verb?....I think it might refer to throwing in
samples of hookbait as an attractor?..(we'd call it groundbaiting), is
    that right?

Chumming and sweetcorn, is used extensively over here for other
species, and probably for trout in and "any method" fishery.

I know that over the pond, carp are not held in quite the same esteem
(!) as over here, but sweetcorn can be deadly, they become totally
pre-occupied with the particles, and won't touch anything else. This is
best exploited in waters where they are seldom fished for, since no-one
else will be using that bait (almost guaranteed in the U.S?), you'll
stand a better than average chance. If you can see them, you can catch
    them!

| | A kipe is the hooked lower jaw that extends upward during the mating
    season,much like the sockeye salmon.
yes we did drag a small boat over land and hid it in the bush along
    with our cooler,tent,and meager supplies.
I went there again last week for some full moon fishing.I only had
one strike and lost the fish when it became entangled in the anchor
rope,it looked to be like the rest (about 4-5 lbs)
LOTS of fish jumping and swimming at the surface but little action.
Hope to try this weekend coming.

| 1563.11 | CHUMMING | BRADOR::S_FITZGERALD |  | Tue Jul 17 1990 14:20 | 13 |
| | I refer to chumming only as scattering a handfull of corn overboard
I then use 1-2 pieces of corn AND a worm for bait. Each fish we caught
    was jammed full of corn.
As for the path in,1/4 of the way in is just an overgrown path. The
rest of the trail consists of a couple of extremly long and tedious
hills (its easier on the way out)actual distance is 7 km's.I have
seen the odd quadrunner in there but they would have a longer drive
as half the way in is on private land and then meets with crown
land about 1 mile from the lake.We have an understanding with the
landowner that we do not bring in dozens of people or advertise
    the location etc.

| | THE reason why all the fish you we're catching we're full to
the brim with corn was that they dont digest it?, some fish
die because they're so full of corn, and cant fit no nutricous
food in they're stomoch. so make a note. when you see these 3.5 to
7 pounders floating up to the top, take a look into the belly,, i'm not
knocking fishing with corn i do so myself, but i do know I dont chum
with it because it can be hazerdous to the environment i enjoy the
    most.
    other than my 2$$
i havent picked up any trout since ice out? glad to hear someone is.

| | Last Sunday I was fishing at a local lake (in the rain I might add).
I was using a 1/4oz kastmaster and on my third cast I hooked up.
I knew it was a big fish but until I saw it roll I didn't know how big.
When I finally saw it I about messed my pants. With the help of my
buddy we managed to land this thing without a net. It was a rainbow and
weighed 9 1/2lbs and was 27" long. I got it on 4lb test I might add.
My largest previous rainbow was around 5lbs and I thought that was big.
This Saturday I was fishing at a creek about 2 hours north of the bay
area and caught 2 rainbows both of which were over 3 lbs. After a week
like that I guess it may be time to hang up the rod and reel for a
while. I'm not sure what I could do for an encore.

| | re.14

Was that Irvine lake, or Santa Ana river lakes? I am in Georgia, and
used to fish in So. Cal., when I lived out there. You want some killer
trout fishing, rent a boat and go fish lake Arrowhead with two pound
line with one pound leader. You hook up with a 3-4 pound native there
and you ain't seen nothing yet, Katie bar the door!!!!
If it was an Irvine lake trout, did it still have the full tail in
back, or was it half missing and shredded? Regardless of where you
caught it, that was a LUNKER trout! How much is it going to cost to
get it mounted? What creek north of the bay area are you fishing?

Do you ever go fishing in the Eastern Sierras? I love lake Sabrina,
and Convict lake, especially where the creek feeds into Convict lake.
