Conference wahoo::fishing-v2

    	About ten of us went to North Hero, on Grand Isle, the first
    week in June, for about 8 years. Just East of North Hero is a small
    island, Knight Island, which was a private campground. The island was
    a mile by a 1/2-mile, and had only seven HUGE primitive campsites on
    it. Our site was an entire bay. The campground finally closed, and 
    since it wasn't the same without the place, we began to go other 
    places...
    
    	The fishing was always fantastic, however. Great smallmouths, up
    to five pounds, and lots of pike, mostly in the 2 to 5 lb. range. None
    of us were avid walleye fishermen, but did manage to catch a few, up
    to five lbs. Some years, if the timing was right, the Largemouth would
    be thick in a place called Dutch Bay, just to the West of North Hero.
    When they were in there, it was a bass per cast, on floating Rapalas.
    
    	The place to contact is Tudhope Marine, in North Hero. They rent
    boats (1988-$55/day for a 14' v-bottom/w 10hp motor). They would also
    be able to direct you to guides (we never needed one), lodgings and
    campgrounds in the area. 
    
    	Lake Champlain, although a lot smaller than L. Ontario, can get
    real rough in a big hurry, so please be cautious in a small boat (At
    least one day a year, we couldn't get off the island all day...)...

    Anyone see the pictures of the "lockness monsters" on the cover of one
    of the supermarket tabloids.  They were taken in Lake Champlain, if you
    believe the stuff in those papers.

    I fish Champlain occasionally.  Mallets Bay is my favorite area, for
    bass and pike primarily.  The mouth of the Winooski river is a popular
    walleye spot.  That's where I caught my one and only walleye, a 5lber, 
    while fishing for smallmouth.  Never really fished for walleye, being a 
    NHerite.  
    
    I've never hired a guide, or fished with anyone from the area, but
    typically manage to do pretty well there.

    ps: the 'monster' in champlain is known as "Champ" and has been a local
    fable for as long as I can remember.

             I had him on for about two seconds when I was fishing
             out of Otter Creek.He's nothin but an Old Pike.

    Anyone been on Champlain recently?

    Any pointers for lake would be appreciated I'm heading up
    there to give it a try. Where going up june 11 its a free
    fishing day for VT never been there. We will be fishing for
    walleye,salmon,trout,and pike anything that bites.
    
    Also anyone ever fish Lake George NY. Going up there June 25-26
    sometimes the big lakes are tough to fish when your a rookie

    I've only fished the area around Burlington, from the Winooski River to
    Sandbar state park, with most of my fishing being done in the vicinity
    of Mallets Bay.
    
    I've found Mallets Bay pretty easy to fish, as it is appears more or
    less like a separate lake in itself.
    
    I've just fished for bass and pike, and once caught a 5lb walleye by
    accident while smallmouth fishing in the Winooski River.
    
    Can't help ya on the trolling.  I'll be spending a few days up there in
    a few weeks and will be glad to fill you in.

    to rough that day. Are you going out on charter boat or

    No, my 'in big boats' comment was just a halfjokingly answer to 
    'how do you fish big lakes?'
    
    I say half jokingly because the lake can get real rough, and there have
    been times when my 20fter has had a rough time out there.  And in
    previous years many times when I didn't dare launch my smaller boats
    in the main lake, or mallets bay for that matter.
    
    I trailer up there once or twice a year from southern nh.

Just talked to a NY DEC Biologist last week about when/where to fish Champlain
and/or Lake George, for salmon and lakers. He said the lamprey control program 
has been excellent, and right now the fishermen are killin the salmon 
in the rivers on the NY side - AuSable, Bouquet, Saranac. He said the salmon
had been well up in the rivers, but would be moving back to the lake. He said it
was the best fishing in years, and that the fish were several pounds instead of 
the usual 15-18". I planned to go, but had to change my plans. I've been 
fishing my local NH waters for trout, instead, and have no regrets (NH has been 
GREAT to us this year, on rainbows and brookies!).
He said trolled streamers (anything in GREEN) worked really well, along with
Jr. Mooselooks in Copper and brass.

As for Lake George, my family went there 2 wks ago, and got skunked in their
previously productive spots in the North Basin (Rogers Rock, Hague).
The fisheries guy said Lake George  wasn't doing all the well so far.

    Been thinking of taking the boat up to Lake Champlain as well next
    year but have a couple of questions::
    
    .  Do I need a Vermont fishing license or can I use my New York?
    .  Are there any areas where you could rent a nice cabin or home
       on the lake for week intervals?
    .  Rather than go all the way to Burlington, are there other areas
       towards the southern part that are accessible with ramps etc?
