I've got a portable Eagle depthfinder that runs on two 6 volt
lantern batteries. Given power consumption I may end up spending
more on batteries this summer than on the equipment!
Does anyone make rechargable 6 volt lantern batteries? Guy
at my local Radio Shack said he thought Sears carried them.
Any other solutions. I want to maintain portability [I use
the Eagle in my canoe and pack all gear into a single duffle
bag.

MCM Electronics had a sale a while back on 6v 4ah sealed lead acid
batteries. 6.95 each. You should be able to make these work.

I've invested in four lantern lead-acids and will let you know what
happens. Since my unit is extremely portable, what with its own
carrying case for the batteries and screen, I'd prefer to not add
bulk. And, it would cost $10-12 extra for the right cables. And,
rechargable lantern batteries can also be used in lanterns, etc. I
think that all in all the cost comes about about right: ten bucks
each for two rechargable lantern batteries [the cost of the cable
alone] to run the finder and two extras for other gear.
Now for the fish.

With a little rigging around the connectors and in the case so I can
run two in series these batteries work very well. Though I haven't
run a set down, my guess is that they will last about 5-6 hours.
Charge time off my auto battery charger [12v @ 2amp] is quick;
in the vicinity of 60-90 minutes max. So with two sets I am
fixed for a very long weekend. At 10 bucks apiece this isn't
a dirt cheap solution but it beats all those trips to Caldors
and provides predictable portability [if Digital could do this
with our products we'd be in the shallows with the pike].
