If you care to dig it out, there's quite a little discussion on
airbrushes in the "LET US SPRAY" topic, 288.
A brief response to yer' question is, emphatically YES, they are
definitely worth the effort but require practice to learn to use
them most effectively. Also, you should not waste time and $$ on
cheap equipment...a good quality brush and compressor are required
to achieve really satisfactory results. A compressor really _is_
mandatory...please believe you wouldn't be impressed/satisfied with
the propellant-cans; their preformance is quite underwhelming for
most applications.
I prefer the Paasche (Pa-shay) brand, personally, but Binks and Badger
also make some good equipment.
"Is it all just for the sake of doing something different?" Hardly; if
yer' into painting rather than film covering yer' models, a good
airbrush is one of the most valuable and versatile tools you can
own.

| A second for Paasche! I just sold one that I bought (real cheap -
they have a sale now for $40 - a great deal) from Tower, because
Paasche was able to fix my old one for less than $10 parts, plus
another $10 labor. They claim that the model number dates it to
the 1930's or early 40's. If they can still support something that
old, I'm sure they can take care of new stuff too. If mine hadn't
been dropped too many times, I wouldn't ave even needed to spend
the $20 to fix it.
