On-board is nice if you have a large enough plane so the extra
weight is insignificant. I put one on my 6 lb Citabria because
I couldn't get my Enya .46 4-stroke to idle well mounted upside
down. This is one of the reasons people add on-board systems.
Another reason is if it's very difficult to get at your glo plug.
I used a C-cell nicad in a battery holder from radio shack
and a micro-switch rigged to the throttle servo to kick in when
the throttle went to idle. With the 1.2 amp-hour cell I could
take many flights on one charge (of course you don't go to
idle much while flying). But if you don't need help with idle
it may not make sense to add an on-board system. How large is
your plane?
I think the McDaniels and other type plug warmers will last
a long time if you are real careful putting them on and taking
them off. If you force them at all the locking piece opens up and
eventually won't lock. Maybe you can bend the locking part back
in a little to make it lock again??
