Funny you should point this out. I too have come to the conclusion
that a Goldberg kit isn't in the future so, I have one of Quay's
kits on order. He was supposed to lay up the fuse this past weekend.
I bought the semi kit. It comes with fuse, cowl, cheek cowls, landing
gear, wheel pants and foam cores for the wing/stabs. This way I can
choose my own wood. I've talked to Quay for about a couple of hours
now (can't wait for the phone bill). Presently they race these planes
with OS 120/4. Now of the high powered 120's are legal. They used
to race them with OS 60 FSR ABC's. I plan to install an OS61 long
stroke in it. This way I can use the engine latter in a pattern
bird. Hey Al, what do you think??

P.S. These plane all have about a 65" wingspan with weights of 8-10lbs.

| 280.3 | SCALE IN PATTERN?...GO FER' IT !! | GHANI::CASEYA | THE DESERT RAT RC-AV8R | Tue Sep 15 1987 11:51 | 13 |
| | Tom,

Welcome back...the net was awfully quiet while you were gone. What
do I think of the O.S. .61 long stroke?...couldn't say as I've yet
to see one perform but all I've read about `em "sounds" good. Or,
did you mean, "what do I think of using the bird in pattern? I
think it's a great idea...my buddy, Bob Frey used to do pretty well
in pattern flying scale birds such as a Top-Flite P-39 and -40 and,
most recently, a Dan Parsons Martin-Baker MB-5. He even got protested
once...guy claimed Bob was getting "sympathy points" for flying
a scale model in pattern (Hah!).

    Adios amigo,	Al

| | As an update I received my kit for the quarter scale shoestring.
    The kit contains;

Fiberglass fuse, wheelpants, top deck and cheek cowls.
Foam wing, horizontal and vertical stab cores. Landing gear, canopy
and a plan sheet. The plan sheet is full sized so it appears quite
big on my wall. No wood was included in the kit. The price to my
door was $ 127.00 . The plans call for the wing to be bolted from
the top to the fuse with the top deck then bolted to the fuse. I
have decided to change this and bolt the wing to the fuse from the
bottom of the fuse. The top desk will then be glued to the top of
the wing. Also I will be removing the cockpit floor to install the
bust of a 1/4 scale pilot. I haven't decided on power. I have been
toying with the idea of using a rear exhaust .61 with a pipe down
the center of the fuse inclosed. If not then I'll go with a .61
and a home made muffler. Also the plans indicate that beam mounts
are to be installed. I'll be opting for a std. radial mount with
a 1/4" ply firewall. I hope to start this sometime in december.
Of course it all depende if I can scrounge up the money for a new
    .61.
