1524.0. "Physical Conditioning" by CSC32::HADDOCK (Saddle Rozinante) Thu Aug 29 1996 11:27

I can't find any other note on this. So I guess I'll start a new one.

It's about that time. Hunting season is just around the corner--
and 'couch potato' doesn't begin to describe what kind of shape I'm
in. More like 'couch mashed potato' ;^). Well, actually it's not
_quite_ that bad, but I found out last year just what kind of
physical condition one needs to be in, and I found out a couple
weeks ago just what kind of shape I'm in now.

Last year I loaded up an old back pack with about 60 lb of sand, and
went out and carried it for at least a mile every morning for about
a month prior to hunting season. Problem was where I live, there
aren't many hills, and when I hit the hills, for about the first
three days I thought I was going to die.

Two weeks ago I went out to the hunting area to do some scouting.
Was nice just to be out in the woods. However, it seemed like
every decision my nephew and I made was wrong about which trail
or direction we should take. After about 10 miles and crossing
four serious hills, about sundown, we found ourselves looking at
a major pile of rock saying "you've got to be kidding me". Luckily
we found a road that went over, so we didn't have a major climb,
but that last hill (would probably qualify as a mountain back east)
was 50 steps and stop, 50 steps and stop. When I got to the top,
the ol' gas tank was bumping empty. I told my nephew, "If this isn't
the last hill, you're going to have to go get the rescue squad". I
was only half kidding. Happy ending, though. We made it back to
the truck just at dark. I had a hard time getting a foot off the
ground high enough to climb in--literally.

So this week I went out and spent about fifty bucks on getting my
bike fixed up. For the last few mornings I've been getting back
in riding shape. I figure the pedaling will be more akin to the
hill climbing I'm going to be needing to do.

I also spent about $20 on U.S Geographical Survey maps of the area.
If you can't find a book store, sporting goods store, or some place
that carries these, you can order them from (800)USA-MAPS.

    Happy Hikin'
