|  |     Today's Worcester Tel. & Gaz/ Joe Michniewicz column....
    Two week shotgun total = 7835 (record) up from '94 = 6099.
             archery       = 1749
    Prelim season subtotal = 9584
    3 day primitv 12/18-20

    central district = 2165 (1290 B/ 775 D)
    western district = 1896
    Conn. Val distr  = 1854
    southeast dist   = 1245
    notheast  dist   =  675
    Quabbin = 284 (not included in total)
    Most points (Eastern) = 19 (Westport) weighed 168
    Largest shotgun*      = 216#,  7 points  (* = lgst w/ name & location
                                             provided. Base note had one
                                             larger)

    F&W density goals for western district = 12-15/ sq.mi.
                          eastern district =  8-12/ sq.mi.
     Current density believed to exceed these numbers in both districts.

    I'm still looking. We've got quiet snow cover vs. frozen, crunchy
    leaves and crusty snow in north central MA. Conditions were pretty
    noisy for walking and the swamps weren't frozen last week. Monday
    should be fun and productive, I hope!

    I believe that the base note probably resulted from a canvas of Central
    MA F&W and Sporting Goods shops as that is where Joe and the T&G are
    based. His fishing articles also tend to focus on this area.

    If you see other local reports, how 'bout sharing them here ?

    Thanks,
    Bob

| 1491.4 | Bear record | USCTR1::HAMELIN |  | Fri Dec 22 1995 08:31 | 8 |
| | Today's Worc. Tel (JM column) had the MA. Black Bear kill which
    included the second season around Thanksgiving. Something like 134 were
    taken in the combined (Sept =131/Nov =3) seasons which was 2 shy of doubling
    the state record (68 in'92) This second season is without the use of dogs.
    The largest was a 437# taken in Cummington by a New Yorker. They
    attributed the high kill to the shortage of foodstocks (acorns &
    berries) which forced the bears off the ridges and into the cornfields.
