1415.0. "First Maine Deer" by 31803::SOUTHWORTH () Mon Nov 21 1994 15:59
Type: 9 point whitetail
Weight: 246 lbs
Where: T2 R4, Maine
When: 8:45 Wednesday, Nov 16 1994
Distance: 50 yds
Weapon: 30.06
My first trip up to Maine to hunt in the big woods for big deer.
After spending the first two days seeing very little sign and no deer,
we headed over to another area that had been producing for some of the
members of the hunting party in previous years.
I set up along the edge of a clearcut overlooking about 50 acres
(it's incredible what lumber companies can do...). There were several
trails leading from the swamp and hardwoods where I was sitting out
into the clearcut. At 8:45, I noticed some movement coming from a
clump of trees located in the middle of the clearcut. After seeing
that it was deer, (he still hadn't raised his head yet), I put the
scope on him. When he raised his head and I saw the rack...it took my
breath away...I tried not to shake too much....!
After gaining my composure, I put the crosshairs squarely on his
shoulder, squeezed the trigger and let it go. The first shot hit right
in the vitals, but he was running at full speed, so I hit him again in
the neck...and down he went.
After an easy 1 hour drag (uphill), put him in the truck and off to the
checking station!
Boy, I love Maine!
