As you familiarize yourself with the equipment...do it at various
distances...10 to 40 yards or so....up and down angles...and get
    some practice at distance judging....

Is your bow...a recurve or compound....if you can crank it up to
about 65 pounds it may be a bit more effective at a greater distance..

Welcome Buckmaster Bob - If you're like most of the rest of us
bowhunters, you should find this new addition most enjoyable. There
is a TON of information in the archery notesfile! It runs the whole
gammut from practice heads, arrow shaft size selections, bow tuning,
broadheads, releases, hunting style...etc... I recommend reading
as much of the information in there as possible. I think it's better
than magazines or a book, because you'll get different ideas and ways
to do different things, besides loads of first-hand experience. I'll
admit, I owe a great deal of my success in the past several years
to the folks in that notesfile. I hope it works as well for you.

    Good Luck, Rob

| | ditto what Rob said, theres more info in there than you can shake a
stick at... as far as practicing, i'd start off very slowly, shoot a
dozen arrrows or so max... slowly working up to a greater amount of
shots. Working on your form is far more important than shooting a
zillion arrows to try and get your strength, that will come soon
    enough.

It's very easy to develop bad habits when your tired, and the name of
the game is consistency... work up slowly, practice often, and be
consistent. If at all possible, have someone knowledgeable help you
out while your still green. Nothing could be better than having a good
tutor while your still a neophyte. Everything else will fall into
    place.

Good Luck, and welcome to Bowhunting!

I added that archery note. Looking forward to practice and
implementation, and hopefully harvest. Deer season seems much closer
    now.

Hi Fra, Yes, I'm still with you all. I haven't done much
in the way of shooting in a while because I'm still in the middle of
a long, arduous house project. Hoping to be done pretty soon though
because we have a little one on the way at the end of this month!

I am looking forward to dusting off "Little Chief" in a short
while - How about you, been shooting? We'll see you all in the
archery file, I expect it to really start getting cranked up shortly
:') Daydreams and heart palpitations have already begun....

Geez, Shucks, aw, come on you guys are too much :') Thanks for
the moral support. But to tell you the truth, there was a glitch in
the planning of all these stages! The little one was supposed to be
here about a month later. So much for plans, right. I'm trying to talk
her into waiting just a couple more weeks so the house is a little more
"livable". Actually I'm busting right now like crazy because I
*DON'T* want to be doing this in October and November. So if you're
    in Hanksville, please stop by!

Rob and I relived, at lunch, last seasons successes. For Rob it was
a beautiful heart shot spike...a story that would make any ethical
bow hunter proud. And also the end of his drought with the rifle
(another spike...okay Fra that's really all we have up here!!!). And
for me, just the oppurtunity to hunt was a success...made sweeter by
a spike horn opening day of the rifle season. I went through the new
baby (born Sept. 25, 1990) syndrome, and ended up with a bad lymph
infection, no sleep and keeping the hunting schedule did me in. So I
felt grateful to get out with my rifle not being able to get out of bed
    most of bow season....

My blood is starting to pump.

| | Kevin, Rob...

wish I coulda been there with ya!!! nothing like sitting and talking
hunting, especially with someone you hunt with... Here at work, Dave
Ayotte and I used to talk hunting all the time... and if it wasn't
reliving past hunts, it was talking about new stands, new equipment,
and just hunting stuff in general... But now that he's living in
Washington state, and no longer with DEC, it's kinda quiet.
We have to to rely on the pony express to get our info back and forth.
It's still nice to sit down and read a letter every month, but it's
    still not the same... :^(

I hunt now with a couple of guys from work, but neither can really be
considered a replacement for Dave (he's got some pretty big shoes to
fill) mostly because they don't hunt in VT with me... and don't talk
    hunting 24 hours a day ;^)

So I can appreciate where your coming from... after the messages I
recieved from Rob about last years successes, I know where your coming
from. BTW congrats Rob on the future addition... hope all works out
well... Don't fret about the timing, it could have been much worse.
    ;^)

PS... i told you guys there was nothing larger than a spike in VT... ;^)

    re .13

The last weekend of Muzzleloader season in VT I saw 3 bucks, one
with a rack...believe it or not, and 2 button bucks. So, if they all
faired well with the dogs/coyotes/poachers the area should be holding
a few spikes/forks and one with a decent rack...maybe I can wait for
something with more than spikes this year....I doubt it though.
