| | Good topic Ian, I think I would keep (actually buy) a drilling
    of some type. Perhaps a 12ga.side-by-side with a .270 or 30-06
over it. With the proper loads I could hunt most anything with
in reason. Of course carrying that combo while hunting upland birds
all day might prove to be tiresome.

| | Well Ian you've certainly painted a bleak scenerio here. I'll assume
that I can't upgrade (go out and buy a new gun... put all the eggs
in one basket), and I'll also assume that my wife and kids couldn't
allow me to borrow their "assigned" gun. I'd have to pick the Remington 760
pump rifle in 30-06. It fits a lot of my requirements i.e., fast
action (quick as an auto-loader), good accuracy (strong bolt and
free floated barrel), very dependable (never jams), 5 or 11 shot
capacity (but not labelled an assault rifle), and good energy (fine
application for most North American game animals and provides good
backup for the family shepard if he bits off more than he can chew).

Its not the best of anything but thats what makes it a great all around
    gun.

A little background: "only one gun" laws exist, I believe in Europe
(Scandinavia?), and have been mooted for England. Interchangeable
barrel guns like the Valmet 412S rifle/combo/double shotgun and
the Sako Triace multi-calibre target pistol, are the result of these
    laws.

This topic was prompted by a roundup of US news on British TV this
morning that concluded with the phrase "new legislation is planned
to reduce or eliminate the vast arsenals of unnecesary firearms in
the hands of hunters and target shooters in the US" - the source of
the material, if not the actual editorial wording was CNN and CBS...
anyway I don't want to go down a political rathole (though I have
a favorite gun for political rats too :-))

I'll answer my own question: I'd go for the Valmet 412S in a suitable
combination for my hunting. If they'd let me have multiple barrel
sets (and not count that as more than one gun) then I'd have a double
12-gauge for birds, a 16-gauge over .223 for pests (rabbits and
squirrels), and a 30-06 double rifle (or possibly something a tad
    hotter) for deer and elk.

If I could only have one barrel set it would be the 30-06 double,
or I might consider a triple barreled (drilling) in 12 gauge over
    30-06.

| | If I had to pick a gun that I _already_ own I would have to go with
a 12 ga. shotgun. With the shotgun I could hunt everything from
birds to black bear. Providing I pick my shots, I should be able
to harvest venison, pheasant, ducks, quail, turkey, bear, etc.
Choke tubes also add to it's versatility. I also could mount a
low power scope on it with the slug barrel.

    (I'd still like a Drilling 8*))

If I was told I had to choose just one gun to keep and rid myself
of the rest? I would keep my M1A1, civilian version of the M14. It would
make the best weapon to fight the revolution with!!!! High mag. capacity
and accurate to 600yds. When the dust settled and we won, I could hunt
all game except birds on the wing.

| | I can see by the previous note that he's not in New England, The best
all around for up here would have to be a 12Ga pump with 5 round
capacity or more. 3" mag chamber with interchangable choke tubes.

Sounds just like one that I have. Winchester.

A varity of rounds can be fired from bird shot to buck shot and slugs.

Good for hunting anything that walks, flies, swims or crawls.

| 396.9 | I pick Sharps | LUDWIG::ETHOMPSON | I`m the NRA | Thu May 25 1989 18:36 | 14 |
| | I read .01 or reading between the lines that the antis already won the way
they wanted it by nomenclaturer and all the part's called out.
So there goes any hope of ever owning an N1A or even replacing
my M1 I had to sell before leaving California.
That leaves out of 7 firearms I still own, only 3 that are legal.
            A repro Enfield 1863,
            An original Srigfiled 45-70 trap-door
            or C Sharps 1863 model
For me, I think I'd pick the Sharps because I read with a sabot
it can be used for an shot-gun,and for blackpowder it would be easy
to keep shooting, and clean. Also, going into a gun shop for brushes
no one will say why do you need any 308 brushes if you're not support
 to have one?

OOOHHHHHHHH But I am in New England, Mass. as a matter of fact.
My choice was made with the Anti-Gun activity in mind. I'd rather
fight with the M1A1 than a shotgun any time. And as I said " After
We Win " I could hunt all but flying critters. Of course because
we won I could easly pick up a shotgun for that!!!

    	Keep 8^)
