| | Jeff,

Is this the same issue of Outdoor Life that had the article about
black bears being more agressive than grizzlies? ;-) . Just
kidding. Do you remember where he got the deer?

The rack ended up in Nashua N.H. Thats right, a dentist ( I forget
his name ) bought the rack and he has it here in Nashua on a mount.

A friend of mine was able to make an appointment to see it.

I can find out more if anyone wishes. As I recall ( and I did
read the article) he paid some large sum of money. I beleive it
    was over 100,000.00

Also the man who shot the deer tried to get it reconized
but sadly the governing body did not reconize this deer until
    after his death.

I read the article also. If memory serves it was shot in New York
state and I think the rifle used was .25 cal.

| | Can't be. Only rifles above 30 caliber are capable of putting down
    deer. :-)

| | I read the article also! If MY memory serves me right it seems to
me that the deer was shot in Missouri, or at least a state closer
to the Missippi river. It seems I remember the author mentioning
the fact of the fertile soil, and abundant farm land contributing
to the bucks rack. The story also goes that this Jordan was walking
near train tracks when the approaching train spooked the deer into
running, and thats when he shot and killed the it. Don't recall
    what caliber rifle was mentioned!

Now my curiosity is REALLY stoked up. I'll have to look though
my old OL mags and see if I can find the story. I do remember
the story mentioning that the monster was spooked by an oncoming
train. Man, to drop a deer like that .......
     Oh well, maybe next year.

some of this up by elaborating on where it was shot, caliber rifle
and so on for us. Thanks

Ive heard in Iowa its not unheard of to take whitetails of the 300#
class. Seems the soybean and corn farms which is most of the states
industry have unknowingly contributed to the fact.

The glory years of the 25 was the two decades bracketing the turn
of the century. During that era, there were upward of a dozen different
25's only two of which are still being made. The others are like
actors of the silent movies-once popular but now forgotten. Few
people have ever heard of the 25 Rimfire but in the 1900's it was
pretty hot stuff- a super rimfire cartiridge.

| | Didn't know if this question belonged here but......
Does anyone know what states form the boundary for claiming live
weight for deer versus dressed weight. I ask this question because
although I know the deer are smaller in the warmer climates (exceptions
I'm sure) it is misleading when you read articles about the deer
hunting. Also, is there an equation to determine what the live
weight is in these states. As I'm sure nobody brings in their deer
undressed (except for one unfortunate hunter that took his first
deer this past fall, but thats a different story). I believe that
in the state of Maine you can qualify for the big buck status even
though your deer doesn't weigh 200 pounds because they add 15% for
the heart/lungs/liver which are usually removed in the field.

| 301.19 | A new Vt state record... | BTOVT::MORONG |  | Mon Nov 20 1989 08:18 | 12 |
| | There was an article in the Burlington Free Press yesterday about
a guy who bagged the new Vt state record buck this year. They have
only been keeping these records since the early 1980's, so I'm sure
bigger ones were taken previously, but this one was big. It was a
269lb 8-pointer, taken in the Northeasty Kingdom (around Granby). Got
it the second day of the season. The weird part is that the rack looked
(picture in the paper) too small for the deer. It only had a 17"
spread. One of my hunting partners got a 205lb 8-pointer 5 years ago
that had around a 20" spread, so the 17" spread seems a bit small to
    me.
