| I have a friend with a #1 in .270 and I have one in .357 Magnum.
Both rifles are very accurate and the fit and finish in quite good.
Neither of us hunt with our #1s, but they are shot regularly. Mine
is too nice (and rare to beat up hunting). They are nice and compact
since there isn't a reciever to add length.
I guess with a little practice you could get a fairly quick
second shot off. When I started small game hunting, it was
with a 'single barrel' shotgun. You quickly learn to make one shot count.

| I have used both the Ruger and Browning single shots and can
recomend them highly. We had a manufacturer aroung here for
awhile called Wickliffe which built an investment cast rcvr
single shot. In my experience the single shot rifles (as with
most good guns) will out shoot the shooter.
Develop a good load and practice with it and the requirement
for a rapid second shot seems to disappear...
The single shots that I have are in .30-06, .243, .22-250
and .45-70 calibers and I have used a .50 cal M/L.

| I have one in .338 Win. Mag. (a favorite caliber of mine) and
it's a typical Ruger - well designed, rugged and reliable. The fit,
finish, balance and trigger are all first rate. It'd be hard to
make a mistake by purchasing one of these.
