Like Guy said... With the help of shooting preserves, the
bird season is extended thru the end of March. So its not the
    "off season" yet :-)
Guess its time to start planning this "off season's" training
    curriculum.

Doing a little sturgeon, steelhead and salmon fishing. Was able
to get into the cabin last weekend (they logged beyond the cabin,
so the snow was knocked down), but couldn't get off the main road.
I did get a fast shot at a coyote. By the time I got the rifle
out its case he was a long way out and really moving. I helped
him make it over the hill, though. Saw two lynx in the yard of
the cabin. Haven't seen any lynx up there for 20 years. Didn't
see any deer or elk, but I couldn't get out on the ridges. Buried
the rig three times. Thank god for winches. It did get the heart
started to get out among'm again. Felt good and therapeutic.

| | i've been doing alot of everything. went up to moosehead last weekend
and limited out on salmon and togue. weekend before that we were
coyote hunting, missed a good shot at a big coyote then tracked
him on snow for a while and my buddy shot him. he weighed 47 pounds,
that should save a few deers lives up here this year!!! other than
that alot of post season scouting and alot of snowmobiling and three
    wheeling.

| | I'm still deer hunting. Don't panic guys, it's with my eyes and
camera (that is sometimes I remember to take the camera). Went
out day before yesterday and saw three deer a couple of partridge
and what I believe was a fisher cat. Went out later in the afternoon
(about 4:00) and really PO'd the wife by not getting out of the
woods until 6:30. Couldn't help it! It was just beautiful and
I hadn't been able to get out for several weeks. Besides, even
after it got dark the sky was so clear and crisp and with the moon
beginning to rise.....well I guess I just conveniently forgot about
the time. Been doing some ice fishing also, but I'm a hunter and
not so much a fisherman. Picked up a new .308 for the fall so I'll
be working up loads for that over the winter. It's also time to
restock my supply of 12 GA trap loads so I guess I'll be busy with
    that too.

    		Catch you later,

| | I'll be searching for new areas to hunt birds in southern NH.

There's no Sunday hunting here in Mass and sometimes my
Saturday errands make it hard to squeeze in even a half day
of hunting. So this year my partners and I are buying NH
small-game licenses so that we can open up Sundays to
         hunting.

I mark interesting places on a topo map and then ask the
landowners for permission to hunt. Most folks are friendly
even when they turn me down, but occasionally you meet
someone like the lady who answered my polite and courteous
request with a chilling and nasty, "Forget it! I've got cats
back there and too many of you hunters don't know what you're
         shooting at!".

On my first outing I got 6 no's and 3 yes's from landowners.
In the spring I'll let my dog tell me which of these
properties are good prospects for the fall.

| | Reading topo maps to try and find some new "hot" spots, getting my
camo's and gear back together for the spring turkey season in VT.
Soon I'll be back in the woods hunting with the camera and scouting out new
areas, hopefully before the snow melts. Besides, I'm awfully busy during the
winter months with a pistol league.

| 136.12 | Try not to find a deer in March! | DECWET::HELSEL |  | Tue Mar 15 1988 13:18 | 21 |
| | Went with a friend last week to shoot a few rounds in a shooting
pit on some Weyerhauser land in Washington State. There were about
a half dozen of us all together. I looked at the end of the pit
(about 150-200 yards long 100 ft deep) and right at the top of the
pit there's a nice big black tail doe stanfing there. We were
making all the noise in the world and she barely seemed to notice
    us.

Since she didn't seem to be in any hurry, one of the guys started
shooting at his targets, not paying attention to the deer. After
about 5 0r 6 mintues, she s-l-o-w-l-y meandered into the pines lining
the top and out of my sight.

We shot for about an hour, probably close to 500 rounds total, mostly
.308, when i looked up and saw another one. She was just standing
at the top of the pit about 30-40 feet above where the targets were.
She seemed to be totally oblivious to the sound of the shots.

Boy, I'll tell ya. Who says they don't read the paper?

    Brett.

Watch her only have males since I want a little girl...My better

coat of stain going for more concrete and chain-link fencing. Breeding

Looks like you may have to clear some of that Moose out of the freezer!

I've been spending a lot of time Salmon Hunting.

I just sent my application in for Antelope in Montana today.
It is a lottery, but they filled 100% of the Pronghorn
    applications last year.

Is anyone else going for Pronghorn in MT this year?

We've applied for zone 700. If you look at the map, or if
you know where you are going like my partner seems to, then 700
    is the logical place.

If you want to go, you can still apply but you have to get your
application in the mail by June 1.

My permit came in last week. Now, if I can only shoot straight! Come

where they get guys crazy enough to throw the birds. I use to go
to the shoots with my Grandfather. Lots of fun. Lots of money
