| | I USE THE EXACT SAME BULLET IN MY HUNTING LOADS. I USE 180 SPIRE
POINTS IN FRONT OF 41 GRAINS OF IMR 4895 AND FIND THEM TO BE EXTREMELY
ACCURATE. I LOAD THE SAME LOAD FOR THREE OTHER PEOPLE AND THAT IS
    ALL THEY WILL SHOOT NOW.

| | At least in my BLR (Browing lever rifle) I use from 150 to 165 grain
spire tip boat tails. They work real well. I espically like the
Speer Grand Slam bullets. I'll look up the powders I've used and
post it later. I use mostly Federal brass but have used some Remington.
Accuracy seemed to be the same for both........

| | I don't reload, but I have had excellent results using factory loaded
180 grain core-lokt pointed soft point in my BLR. I have pulled
the trigger on 3 deer with that gun in the last 3 years. Ranges
varied from 25 to 75 yards. All were one shot kills, and two dropped
in their tracks. The most recent one was a heart-lung shot with
no bones in the way and he ran about 75 yds before piling up dead.

.308 is plenty for deer in N.H.

| 132.4 | 165 grain spbt for deer | TWOBOS::LAFOSSE |  | Wed Feb 24 1988 13:22 | 9 |
| | i'm currently reloading some 308's for one of the hunters in our
club... he hasn't taken them out and benchrested them in his gun
yet, but two of the other guys in the club use the same load and
have had excellent accuracy/kill results with them. I don't have
the powder weights on hand i'll post them tomorrow... But for a
308, 165 grn spbt are the best bullet for deer.

| | Thanks guys, I'll be looking forward to the information. I've noticed
reference to Boat Tail bullets a number of times. For deer hunting
loads at the kinds of ranges we hunt here in New England, is the
"extra" accruacy you enjoy with a BT noticeable?

| 132.6 | Can't hurt | GENRAL::BOURBEAU |  | Thu Feb 25 1988 10:17 | 11 |
| | I'm no expert, but seems to me that so long as the bullet does
a good job under the conditions your hunting in,a little better
    accuracy couldn't hurt.
BTW,in case some of you are unaware, those of you who reload
for friends, beware of accepting money for it. BATF considers this
selling ammo without a license. They tried to trick my brother
into admitting to doing this, but he was aware of it and declined
    to accomodate them.

| | Several .308's that I know about shoot 168 grain bullets ahead of
40+ grains of IMR 4895 very accuratly. I had good luck with
H335 (don't remember how much). A friend recently started using
4064 and likes it a lot (accurate, good velocity).

    Your milege may vary...
