| 26.1 | who me? | CLUSTA::STORM |  | Thu Sep 17 1987 15:05 | 17 |
| | naw.

I've just spent the last month peering through catelogues and ordering
several hunder bucks worth of decoys, hunting clothes, dog training
    items, etc.

I bought my N.H. Pheasant license and N.H. Duck stamp yesterday.

    I've cleaned my gun. Twice.

I've been trying to take the dog out for a romp in the woods every
    couple of days.

Naw... I'm not getting anxious yet.

    IS IT OCTOBER YET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

| | Me either. Shot a couple rounds of skeet last night. When I get
home tonight I got to put another coat of paint on the dog box.
Put new lines on some of the decoys last week. Been runnin the
boys most every night for the last month. Hosed the old dirt and
crap off the boat. Checked one of the blinds a couple weeks ago
and re grassed part of it. Spend my nights reading Cabela's and
Dunn's catelogs. The boys are driving me nuts, waking up early
with the cooler weather, raring to go. Saw some geese go over the
house on Monday. This is torture. What masochist started this
note? I may have to go out this weekend and pop some crows. Oh,
to see that magical puff of feathers suspended in mid-air. I gotta
go and get my daily fix of Hoppes fumes and Buck lure.

| 26.8 | Getting Ready?  NAWWWW... | PLANET::CONROY |  | Fri Sep 18 1987 09:11 | 43 |
| |
Last nite I went to the local sporting store I do business
with to get some polypro underwear. I wound up getting the poly
(shirt & pants @ $23 each), some razorback plastic target heads,
    and a Browning semi-auto 12 guage (B-80). Once I held the Browning
I couldn't put it down. It stuck to my hands like glue. Only
weighs 6lbs and change(4 shot). I'll love carrying it but will have
to do some butt stock work or the recoil will kill me.

I plan to camo the bow this weekend. I have read every article
on deer hunting available. I have made out the checklists, made
out the menus for the week of bow season, made out a schedule including
scouting trips, reviewed my ammo supply to see how I stood for shells
since Grouse,Pheasant is almost here. I finally got the last stamp
    (federal Duck) this week.

As I was coming up 495 from Bellingham, a flight of 50 or
so GEESE were just coming off the runway and flew over the highway
at about 150 feet and climbing in a slow circle. They are getting
ready too due to the cooler temperatures and the lower light levels.

I have started to pack some of the gear for the Nov 2 trip
and have been going over the topographical maps. But I need to get
the Browning out to the range and get used to it before heading
out for the birds. I will take the dog along but she is not trained
and appears to be a little noise shy due to thunderstorm activity
this summer. She didn't bolt when I fired last year but I will have
to watch it.Fireworks on the fourth drove her crazy. It's going
    to be tough.

I now need to get another gun rack for the house and one for
    the pickup.

I will use the Mossberg 12 pump for the dirty jobs but go
with the Browning for deer and pheasant/grouse. The mossberg has
a nice long barrel for the ducks/geese and will take the 3" magnums.

September of 88 is the date for steel shot state wide according
to an article I read last nite. Is that true??

                         Mike

| | I'm off to Belfast Maine to start the bird season. Going after
    grouse primarily.

The guide sez to bring mod choke and 6's. I've always used open
chokes and 8's, 7.5's. What do you guys think?

If I can only bring one gun, should I bring a 12, 20, or 28? They
are all superlight doubles or o/u.....

    Good, safe, sporting shooting,

| | Hi Bill, boy you know how to start trouble asking what gun and load
to use! If I had to use ONE gun on patridge, Id probably go for
    a 20ga O/U, choked IC/mod. Id load 7.5's in the IC and MAYBY 6s
in the mod, depending on the number of leaves on the trees. The
gun would be extremely light with barrel lengths of 26 inches maximum,
preferably 25 inches. Then again, I might choose a gun choked skeet
and IC................. Well boys, have at it, I made my choice.
By the way Bill, I thought you guys shot very well as a group on
Saturday. Skeet and I had alot of fun, we'll be there again this
    Sunday.

| | I'm really getting itchy, just got back from the range, 270 bolt
is shooting a 3/4" 5 shot group at 100 yds, three are cutting each
other.... and its only my first time out with the thing since June.

As far as the load and gun for grouse... I'd opt for the 20 gauge
O/U also, I'd go with the 6's. Now if I could just afford one..:-)
Been doing alot of shooting with a neighbors and I love it.

    Have fun, Fra

| | I go with Jeff on gun. 20 gauge over and under. I would probably
go with 7.5's. Possibly 6 field loads in the IC and 7.5 mags in
    the MOD bbl.

I had a great time in Vermont this past weekend. Can't get out
this weekend. Will be there in spirit.

| | What, no woodcock? I agree with most previous replies. Take the
    20ga O/U IC/Mod with 7.5's.

As an alternative, how about a 12ga blackpowder muzzleloader (side
by side with cyl bores) throwing 7.5's. You need to give those
poor early season birds a little edge after all.
