I have a 1989 Alpha I outdrive that I really wacked against a
rock or two near the end of last year. The shaft, I was told,
snapped, the fin on the skeg nonexistant and since the insurance
was covering the repairs I ended up agreeing to a replacement
rather than a repair of the lower part of the outdrive.
The upper gears of the outdrive were not replaced and I am now
getting some opinions from friends that they could have been
damaged, invisible hairline fracture, and may come apart anytime.
The people who swapped out the parts did not mention the possibility
of fractured upper gears and after working with them do not have
much confidence in them.
So, I guess what I'm asking is, what could happen if the gears did
break and if it were you would you replace the gears now or take
a chance?

I would pose this same question back to the insurance company.
This could fall under the same problems that the automotive insurance
covers. Usually it just falls under a "reclaim" of the same incident.

| My father was in the same situation with his old BAJA. He hit a rock
broke off the skeg, ruined the prop and the sort. He was in salt water
though. Anyhow the lower unit of the outdrive was completely rebuilt.
It ran ok for a couple of months then "BAM" the upper unit blew out.
The people who rebuilt the lower unit never mentioned this as a
possibility. The second incident was not covered since he had no proof
it was due to the original accident. You should fix it right the first
time around. The insurance companies usually have you get a couple
estimates anyway. If you mention the possibility of damage to the upper
unit at this time I'm sure any reputable marine mechanic will agree, if
not I would take it some place else. Good luck....

Gee, that sound like what happened to me last summer with my Alpha 1.
The shop I took it into insisted that they replace everthing including
the upper gears or they would not work on the outdrive for the reason
stated. They convinced the insurance company of that , it was a hassle
with the insurance company but I am thankful they did. Also after they
fixed the outdrive in this manner I got a full year parts and labor
warrenty from the shop that did the work on the entire outdrive.
