I was working on 55hp evinrude over the weekend, I went to drop the
lower unit to replace the water pump. The shift shaft that controls the
forward or reverse is not allowing the lower unit to drop off.
This engine is late 78 or 79, am I missing a pin to disconnect the
shaft? Or do I have to undo the linkage underneath the carb before the
unit will drop? In the past I remember just dropping the whole unit.
Thanks,
Dennis

Are you sure that the 'joint' which the shift shaft ends slip into have
the bolts backed out ALL THE WAY. If this is the way your engine is
set up that could be stopping you from being able to drop it. There may
be a groove that the ends of the bolts won't clear without backing them
out all the way.

Just so happens yesterday I worked on my old 18hp Johnson, same thing as -1 described, you need to back out the bolts on the linkage before it'll let go. On mine, tbere was a small access panel about half down that gave access to it. wayne | |||||

I RECENTLY HELPED A FELLOW DECMATE DROP A LOWER UNIT ON A 76 EVINRUDE
70HP. UNDER THE CARBURETOR LOOKING AT THE ENGINE FROM THE SIDE WERE
THE GAS CONNECTION IS LOCATED YOU WILL SEE A BOLT WHICH HOLDS THAT
SHAFT WHICH IS GIVING YOU A PROBLEM. MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE ENGINE IN
GEAR THEN LOOSEN THE BOLT (NO NEED TO REMOVE IT) AND THE SHAFT WILL
MOVE 3 INCHES BEFORE YOU WILL ENCOUNTER SOME RESISTANCE THE SHAFT IS
BEND AT IS POINT. JUST GIVE THE LOWER UNIT A GOOD TUG AND IT WILL COME
RIGHT OUT AFTER THIS POINT.
