Rick,
For below-waterline fittings use a product called Life Caulk.
It will seal out water and help prevent screws from working
loose. Spag's has it for about $4, or any decent marina should
also have it. Regular silicone/rtv sealer will dissolve when
left exposed to water.
Getting ready for spring already? With this warm weather and
open water it's tough not to think about it! 8^)

| Uh, I thought that the one thing silicon rubber is not recommended for
is below-waterline applications. Polysulphide caulk is (Life-caulk or
3M 5200).

| There's an interesting note in the ad in the Ward's catalog for the
3M "5200" bedding compound: "Not recommended on plastics except
fiberglass". No such warning on Life-calk. I assume that your
speedometer pickup is plastic like mine. I used Life-calk in the seams
of the bottom of my wood boat. Works good. Easy to use and remains
flexible.

Here he goes again, calling the factory!
CC in Orlando says they use Butyl Caulking for sealing the pickups
to the transom. Guess I'll have to try and find some now. As for
the possibility of soggy wood, Reg, I'll check on it and hope for
the best. I did notice that one spot on the stringers under the
rear seat has lost it's fiberglass and wood is exposed. After
a winter of drying I'll seal that up also.
