Hi fellow boaters,
What kind of credentials should a boat inspector have? Is there
some kind of license, bond, or certification? I would like to get
a power boat looked at (if there is a difference between a sail
or power inspector).
I would appreciate some recommendations.
Thanks
Joe D.

Anybody can hang out a shingle and call themselves a surveyor (not
inspector as you called it). There is no license required unless
some states have local laws but I doubt that.
The best way to find a good one is to talk to some local lenders
and see who they use for surveys that they grant loans from. Insurance
agents for boats may also give you a reference. When the same person's
name keeps coming up, you have your candidate. You want a tough
and thorough survey so ask who is a picky surveyor .
Also remember that a survey only covers the hull and equipment,
not the engines. You will need a separate engine survey by a marine
mechanic.
Lots of luck.
