| I think that a course in Maynard could be a winner. It would take
planning to get it up and running. My now fully committed through
early fall on Division and District tasks and couldn't has a direct
impact. Willing to offer guidence if someone wants to persue it.

| You may call the Coast Guard Auxiliary Director's Office, which is part of the
Boating Safety Division, in Boston at (617) 223-8310. They cover all of New
England.
There is also a boating saftey "800" number at Boat U.S.. Sorry I don't have it
on the tip of my fingers, but will look it up and post it here. Of course I
wouldn't complain if someone out there beat me to it.

As you may have guessed, I am currently enrolled in the marlboro
course. Just a quick question about the format of the 13 week course. Is
there only one exam? A final at the end of the course? The course certainly
covers soup to nuts and if a person had no boating experience I would think
that passing might be a difficult task.

There are likely to be lots of tests, mostly when you least
expect them - -
and ALWAYS ! on stuff you didn't think they'd bother testing you on
and NEVER ! on the stuff you read and studied
but I'll bet you NEVER ! get a question about required PFD type for
water skiing - - especially NOT for b*r*f**t*ng (-:, (-:

Rick,
You could always ask the instructor, they're usually pretty good
about things like that. Besides, when he/she pops a surprise quiz
on ya, I don't think they'll buy the excuse "but the guys in the
boating notes conference told me there wouldn't be a quiz!". 8^)

| The standard format for an Auxiliary Boating Safety and Seamanship (BS&S)
course contains six lessons which are refered to as the Core material.
Most Flotillas will give the exam on the Core immediately after the six lessons
have been covered in class. The final exam will cover the "optional" seven
lessons for BS&S. Other courses many vary, but the scheme is alway similiar to
having one mid-term and one final.
They are not difficult to pass.....unless you don't read the text and you
perfer to sleep though the leatures!

Well reading the text is no problem, but staying awake is since
it's my third night of class every week! :-)
Seriously, It seemed to me that a person with no boating knowledge
might have a tough time. Just considering all the new terms... I guess
that's not the case, though...?
Gee 6 core and 7 optional classes.... I wonder if NH requires the
7 optional ones... :-)

| Rich, that's a good point. Terminology can pose a problem. Especially those
term which have unique nautical meanings that differ from everyday usage.
Knot, range etc.. etc..

| Both my wife and I took the test *BEFORE* we got our first boat about 3
years ago. We had no boating experience before going to the Coast
Guard Aux course.
Just pay attention and do the homework
Even though all this new stuff doesn't seem to make any sense (i.e.
red, right, returning) when you get on the ocean it all comes back.

One of the CG guys will have to answer about when/where specifically,
but I understand that new sessions begin once the new year does.
As for cost... at least the one I'm taking at Assabet HS in Marlboro
is VERY reasonable. $10 for books and $20 for the school. BTW: the
20 bucks for the school covers the entire family. If you have a family
of 5 interested in attending it would cost 20 + (10*# of books).....

| I took the CG Aux course at U-Lowell last winter (from Feb to April
if I remember right) It was taught by the Lowell Flotilla (who else,
eh?). I know that at least one of their instructors is a DEC employee
and looks into this notesfile from time to time. Maybe he'll post
their current schedule.

| I am currently enrolled in a CG Aux course entitled Advanced Navigation.
The subject matter covered deals with all sorts of interesting navigational
and piloting techniques. The instructor is very competent, constantly
sharing personal experiences as well as engaging the class in conversation.
The course is excellent!

| Just a note to let you know that the Environmental Police are
putting on a free boating safety class in Winchedon MA, at
the Murdoc High School on Grove street... It is usually
a 6 week class, one nite a week for 6 weeks, but this class
was going to meet two nites a week for 3 weeks. This was to
begin last nite (Tuesday, 12-MAY), but not many people
showed up... The instructor said we would start next
week, and he would be able to cover all the material
in 4 classes, scheduled for the following dates:
TUESDAY 19-MAY (7 - 9 p.m.)
WEDNESDAY 20-MAY (7 - 9 p.m.)
TUESDAY 26-MAY (7 - 9 p.m.)
WEDNESDAY 27-MAY (7 - 9 p.m.)

| Did someone already reply to this? If not, I would call your local
chapter of the US Power Squadron. The Coast Guard is also great but
not as many classes/locations are available.
Give me a call if you want more info. on what the US Power Squadron is
about (lots of retired Navy and Coast Guard folks!).
