| | Wow..thats a long note for the end of the day here. Here's my 2p worth

Suffolk is a reasonably large county on the East of England. Part of
it is on the coast and there are several large rivers running through
it (eg. the Ouse and the Stour), no doubt there will be lots of smaller
tributaries coming from them all, and many will have bridges (like the
one you mentioned) over them..this is common even today.

I'm no expert, but think Suffolk is quite rural and therefore it would
be difficult to pinpoint and exact dairy farm withourt a name..guess
you would have to speak to someone who knew the place well.

Its a pity you can;t remember the surname and many farms are named
after their occupants - and even if the farm is non-existant today,
often current places are named after them. Bear in mind that lots of
farms are owned by the church/parish and sublet to families (although
the lets do tend to be passed from generation to generation)

You probably already know that a lot of English surnames come from a
persons occupation or craft (Did you sing too? - Richard
    Carpenter..sorry, bad joke! ;-) )

Can't shed much light on battles either unfortunately.

You might want to explore the geneology conference to see if anyone
there can give pointers - I would suspect that the folks there will
    have an interest in history.

    Jackie

                                                                     ^^^^^^

    >>(Think I can learn to speak "proper" English (vs American English) in
    >>under a few weeks from all of y'all? :-) )

I think you'd be better of keeping your American English..makes
for much more interesting conversation (just ask Chris! :-) )

Oh...and not all English people use 'love' at the end of a
sentance...some positively *hate* the term being applied to them.
One of the people I used to work with used to go crazy when someone said
that to her! :-) I think its a regional thing though. Others
    comments?

| | Hi Strech,

Sheby is a shortened version of my name. I use it to make other peoples
life easier..(It is easier to pronounce). My real name is Shebnem
(this is the English spelling..). I am originally from Turkey,
I have been living in England for 6 years and still my English
isnt perfect and I still have my accent!

I've been working in Digital since August and I am only here for a year
as I am a placement student and I go back to university at the end of
    September.

Other than that I love having fun, going out, meeting new people etc
    etc.

Well that is alittle about me!!! Nice to meet Ya..

Are you sure "you" didn't move across the pond sometime before 1777? A lot
of Englishmen moved to America in this time frame. And this incident sounds a
lot like any of several battles in the American Revolution.

I'm no expert, but I believe BLACK47, the band, took the name from a
bad year of the famine when the potato crop failed....turned black and
    rotted in the fields.

Yes there was a big famine Ireland last centuary I believe (1847
perhaps?). The "potatoe famine", but my history is absolutely appaling
anyway, so at best, I can only be vague and unsure about what I've just
told you!

Glad to help with the question. I've been to Ireland on trips before
and had the solemn experience to go to some of the areas hardest hit by
the famine...and sadly look upon the mass graves of those that didn't
    make it.

But it is a beautiful country with much rich history and wonderful
    people.

plan a trip and would like some travel advice, don't hesitate to ask.

I've been to Ireland, England, Wales, France, New Zealand, Australia,
Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, and of course parts of the US.

Ah...but the more you travel the more you will see that America is a
very special place and we are fortunate in many ways.

I have friends in Ireland that pay 46% income taxes.
I have friends in England that routinely worry about being blown up.
I have friends in Wales with little hope of a good job.
I have friends in Australia that can't shop after 5:00 p.m. (heavens!
    :^))

Not to mention things like lousy plumbing, pollution, lack of valuing
    of diversity, etc!

Whoops, d'ja vous (sp?):
An IRA bomb went off in London yesterday evening (Earls Court area).
Luckily, it was in an empty house in an isolated area, and there were
no casaulties.

| | Charley,

There was also a song "Major Tom" by PETER SCHILLING that was
released somewhere in the early to mid 80s. My original question was
whether or not these two songs were tied together somehow and if they
were based upon a REAL person named Major Tom? If so, I'd like any
other info - for curiosity's sake...

I'm not sure if the 'major tom' is/was a real person, but I do remember
hearing about a condition some of the astronauts experienced...an erie
pull from the depths of space...an irrational temptation to unteether
during space walks in order to float away into the vastness of space
forever. Thankfully none of them ever went thru with it!
