| | It's "Aviation Week and Space Technology".
I know that Russia has successfully tested an unmanned subscale model of a
shuttle-type orbiter, but all I remember offhand about their full-scale orbiter
is that they're expected to have it working within 'a few years'.

I HAVE BEEN GETTING IT FOR 2 YEARS AND IT A LOT. THE COLOR PHOTOS OF SHUTTLE
MISSIONS ARE EXCELLENT. THE MAJORITY OF THE MAGAZINE DEALS WITH GENERAL
AVIATION, AIRLINES AND THE MILITARY BUT THERE IS GOOD SHUTTLE COVERAGE.

Just heard that the Soviet Space Shuttle is set for launch on May 18.
Dignitaries are assembling at the Baikonur Cosmodrome for the
event. Cable News Network is supposed to televise live.
If I knew the time of launch I could compute the orbit and
determine if North America has a chance to see it. Please send mail.
Thanks. Bruce.

| | It is not clear what the Soviet Laucnh will be, it was not
stated that it would be the Shuttle . CNN will not be covering
it live unless it is cover over INTERSPUTNIK satellite link.

What happen, the Soviet Uniion announced that the news
was invided to Baikonur for 4 hours on the afternoon
of the 18 th of May (local time). The Soviet Union has not said that
it would be a Suttle launch. On Radio Moscow they have said that
they will announce the Shuttle Launch ahead of time (
based on pervious performance I would take that to mean
24 to 48 hours ) so far on TASS or Radio Moscow there has been no
information about a Shuttle Launch or anthing else.

The Spot Satellite has seen the Shuttle on the Launch pad
but that allone is not enough.

Previously the Soviet Union has had 6 support ships (SESS)
for a man lanch in the Alantic Ocean, however I can only account
for 4 SESS with one being missing form a key point near Montivideo.
However today (16 may ) I did not receive any vhf transmision (voice
or TLM) form MIR - but this is not unusually as the crew could be busy
unloading the Progress 36 that dock this Sunday. What is strange
I did no receive any HF RTTY form the SESS at Sable Island.
This could be an indication that the Kosmonaut Yuri Gargain (SESS)
is on the move south, this could indicate a low inclination orbit
thus not needing a SESS at Montivideo or for that matter a total
    of six ships.

So stay tuned to Radio Moscow and TASS news service as I would
expect that if it was the Shutle it would be announce within the
next 12 hours. It still could be a show and tell of the Shuttle
with a fly by on its jet eng or a launch of a satellite for another
country to deminstrate that they are in the launch business.

| | Well, I saw the soviet shuttle mated to energia on CNN last night.
It looked identical to the us shuttle.
No further details reported.
