TO: General Distribution Date : May 9, 1997 From : Chuck Rolke Dept : Network Product Business Unit DTN : 226-5537 M/S : LKG1-2/M07 Email: NETCAD::Rolke Subj: NICWORKS/FDDI Field Test Software Available NICWORKS/FDDI is a local management tool designed for use with Digital's FDDI network adapters under WindowsNT. It is a simple graphical application that allows the user to view a variety of real time statistical and descriptive information about the Digital NIC installed in his system. NICWORKS/FDDI will be distributed on the network management diskette included with Digital's FDDIcontroller/PCI (DEFPA, DEFPZ) and FDDIcontroller/EISA (DEFEA) adapters. You may get a pre-release field test copy for your own use and evaluation. You may distribute copies of NICWORKS/FDDI to customers at your discretion, provided that you make them aware that this is pre-release software. Regular updates will be available from a number of on-line sources free of charge. NICWORKS/FDDI is initially supported on Windows NT V4.0 or greater for Intel and Alpha. Windows 95 support is in the works, and will be available eventually. A version for MacOS is also planned. Please note that a new network device driver is required for this application. The driver version must be v4.01T or later. Please see HUMANE::FDDI Note 2253 for information on getting a new driver. You may obtain a copy of NICWORKS/FDDI from the following locations internally: NETCAD::USER$452:[ROLKE.PUBLIC.NWFDDI11]NWFDDI11.ZIP (decnet) or by anonymous ftp: cwalti.lkg.dec.com 16.20.108.30 cd nwfddi image get nwfddi11.zip The .ZIP file contains the Alpha and Intel versions. Be sure to unzip the files using PKUNZIP -d to preserve the directory structure. All feedback should be sent to [email protected]. Regards, Chuck

2254.1 | What does NICWORKS/FDDI do? | NETCAD::ROLKE | The FDDI Genome Project | Fri May 09 1997 14:43 | 36 |
What can NICWORKS/FDDI do for you? 1. Display data. NICWORKS/FDDI will display the current values of many counters, settings and addresses. 2. Firmware upgrade. NICWORKS/FDDI is able to upgrade the adapter firmware on any Alpha or Intel system. This should work even if the adapter is on-line and handling network traffic! During the upgrade your system will think that the FDDI ring has gone down for a few seconds. When the upgrade is complete then your network traffic will resume. The NWFDDI11 kit has firmware V3.1 files for DEFPA and DEFEA (DEC3002 and DEC3003) adapters. 3. Help. NICWORKS/FDDI has an extensive help file which explains many FDDI terms and concepts. 4. Error Log. NICWORKS/FDDI is able to extract an adapter's error log from flash memory for display or for export to a file. 5. Web server. NICWORKS/FDDI is able to export your adapter's information for web browsing over the TCP/IP Port of your choice. 6. Other things. Play with the program and see what it will do. What can you do for NICWORKS/FDDI? If you install NICWORKS/FDDI please export the error log file for each of your DEFPA/DEFEA adapters and then mail the files to me at NETCAD::ROLKE. If you intend to upgrade your firmware please extract the error log before you upgrade so that the reported firmware version matches the error log version. Regards, Chuck |
