I've been asked by a customer if he can configure his FDDI network as a
Tree of Rings. I would like to give him a definite yes or no.
The topology he has in mind is:
FDDI CONC
+-----+
|A B|
+-----+
/ \
/ \
/ \
+----M-+ +-M----+
|A B| |A B|
+------+ +------+

Existing
Building rings
He has existing FDDI rings in two buildings and wishes to connect them via
a concentator in the middle. Is this a legal config?
We have suggested that he look at a Tree configuration, and not have rings in
the buildings.
Thanks Mark.

This is legal but not what you want.
The A-M, B-M connections will result in a dual homed condition,
A-M standby, B-M active, not a connection between the two existing
rings.
You can connect the concentrator into the main ring, B-A, A-B, but
that'll create one dual ring and use twice as much media.

I believe that the only way to do what the customer wants is to replace
the top level concentrator with a GIGAswitch. A slightly more expensive
option. ;-)

Re .1 and .2
Thanks for your replies.
I wanted to be 100% sure.
We have suggested a GIGAswitch/FDDI but its just a little bit more than
a concentrator.
Mark.
