1438.0. "2 DEMFAs on DEC 7000 for NFS Service" by TKOVOA::TANAKA_TOS () Tue Sep 06 1994 07:43

This is cross posted to Alpha_OSF_1_IFT and FDDI.

Hi all,

I am considering the following configuration for FDDI connectivity.
The options catalog says that DEC7000(OSF/1) supports up to 8 DEMFAs(XMI FDDI
controller) per system. My understanding is such that the system is able to
have up to 8 different ip addresses(1 ip address per DEMFA).
In the following example, the DEC 7000(NFS file server) is supposed to have 2
different ip addresses. It will export 2 different directories with 2
different ip addresses. Further, FDDI connection will be physically
separeted for those 2 DEMFAs. I think the performance of the NFS service will
be better than 1 DEMFA.

	+ DEC 7000 +                      +------------+
	+ (NFS 	   +                      + GIGA       +
	+  Server) +                      + Switch     +
	+	   +                      +            +        +---------+
	+          +-------+   FDDI       +            + FDDI   + DEC3000 +
	+ Dir A <--+DEMFA 1+==============+            +========+ (NFS    +
	+	   +-------+              +            +        + Client1)+
	+	   +ip 16.161.1.1         +            +        +---------+
	+	   +                      +            +
	+	   +-------+   FDDI       +            + FDDI   +---------+
	+ Dir B	<--+DEMFA 2+==============+            +========+ DEC3000 +
	+	   +-------+              +            +        + (NFS    +
        +          +ip 16.161.1.2         +            +        + Client2)+
        +----------+                      +------------+        +---------+

In short, NFS client 1 will nfs-mount Dir A of 16.161.1.1 while NFS client 2
nfs-mounts Dir B of 16.161.1.2.
I expects that access to Dir A will be conducted through DEMFA 1 and the
access to Dir B will be through DEMFA 2. As a result, those accesses will be
separated each other.

Question #1. Is the above configuration(idea) feasible enough?
             If so, is the same thing possible in case of 8 DEMFAs as well?

Question #2. Is there anybody who has an experience of the above configuration?

Your prompt reply would be appreciated.
