My customer in Calgary is currently running a seismic application which must
transfer large files ( about 500MB) from a CRAY to a VAX.
Today he is using an 8810 with a DRB32 as the VAX. He is considering
upgrading to an FDDI link and a VAX 6000 or 7000, but wants some
assurance that he will see at least 45 Mbits/second transfer rate
between the CRAY and the VAX if he uses FDDI. He is concerned about the
DECcontroller 400 and the VAX XMI bus being fast enough to handle his
data at this rate.
I guess what I'm looking for is any characterization studies that have
been done on this type of application using FDDI as the network or
a customer reference site where this type of CRAY to VAX application
is being run.
Other ideas for assessing the performance are welcome too. If we wanted
to run a benchmark, where could this be done?
Thanks for any help.

As far as application throughput goes, it depends on the application
you are trying to run. In any case, I have seen DECnet, TCP/IP and
UDP/IP at or above 45 Mb/sec, detailed numbers for which I can supply.
So consider yourself assured.

The XMI bus and the FDDIcontroller 400 can do 100Mb/sec. There are
public domain technical articles on this topic. If you need them,
please get in touch me.

We could do this here in our labs or at the customer site. Please get
in touch with me for any additional help.

Ram,
Thanks for the quick and helpful response and for your willingness
to get involved to help make this sale. I forwarded your response to
Phil Hochhausen, the Shell sales rep in Calgary. He should be
calling you soon.
