Hi all,
Does anyone have any knowledge of a possible reliability problem
with the DAS FI module - the reason I ask is that we have a
customer with 10 newly installed DECbridge 620's, and 2 FI modules
have failed in the last 2 weeks. One of them appears to have a bad
port as the port led stays flashing green permanently, and the
other card appeared to die with all leds off whilst in use, and now
fails self test.
This may be a case of bad luck on the customers part, but they dont
see it that way, and want an explanation of why they have had so
many failures (another bridge was DOA on installation).
If anyone has any information I'd be grateful,
regards,
Joe Frost

The FI module never exibited any reliability problems during product
development and formal reliability testing. This is the first I have
heard of any quality problems with it.
You might expect it to fail slightly more often than the other
modules (except maybe the NI3) because it has so many more components
on it.
The blinking green light appears to indicate a bad optical transceiver.
The transceivers are only tested during the special loopback mode, so
you may want to try that test. The "dead board" with all LED's out is
a very wierd failure mode.

Re .1
Thanks very much for the reply - I'm glad to hear that there are no
known problems - btw - it is a fabulously designed module...
Re .2
FI I believe means Fibre Interface (sorry Fiber in the US), and
there are currently 6 different types - single/multimode SAS,
and single/multimode DAS, and combination singlemode, and multi-
mode DAS (eg Single on port A, multi on port B, and vv). The
DECbridges have 4 plug in modules one of which is the FI, the
others are the processor (AP/AP2), the single/tri port Ethernet
card (NI/NI3), and the queue manager (QM) - Hope that helps.

Joe

I've checked the consumption data through 31-MAY. The DAS FI module
doesn't appear abnormally high.
