Recently while setting up one of the new DECconcentrator 500s with
out-of-band management I noticed that the message that you get
when attempting to do a SET operation without enabling the
update switch is "unknown error". A suggestion would be to give
the user an informative message like "Set operation not allowed -
enable update switch and retry operation".
I was attempting to set the IP address from the OBM port and had
thrown the hardware switch but had not turned the update switch
option ON from the SET menu.

Are you sure? You should be able to do sets on the bridge as long
as the (hard) write access switch is down - the update switch
should make no difference since it refers to microcode reload
