I have a dec-conecntrator 500 with a 4 port optical interface
card in the back, and no manual. What do the blinking green
lights mean on the back of the port card. It does not matter
wether I plug in an optical cable to a defza or not - they still
blink green.

Green blink means "attempting to connect". If the cable is plugged in, it
should get out of that state and go to solid green ("connected"). If it
doesn't, you may have a cable problem. Do you have the transmit and receive
ends at the DEFZA switched around? Check the cable by looping it. If you
plug a looped cable into a concentrator, you should get a red light (connected
but invalid topology). Plugging a looped cable into a DEFZA will give you
solid green ("connected" -- since S to S is valid). Those tests would rule
out broken cable or broken transceivers, which basically leaves miscabling.

Also,.. the DEFZA must be under some kind of OS control. Pluugging
the cable into a DEFZA that is powered down,.. or not being driven
(presumably by the Ultrix driver) will not change the state of the
connection.
