I have seen undetailed mention in this notefile of a vendor product which
converts from SMF to MMF and vice versa. There is a situation here where
we probably could win if we offer that solution. Customer needs to connect
two VAXen via 11 Km of fiber, just a bit too much for our LB200 and not
cost justifiable for a pair of FDDI bridges.

Could someone maybe give me details of that "box" with source and
    aprox. price?

    Thanks in advance!

| Rolf,
There are a couple of companies that manufacture SMF-MMF devices.
One is Optical Data Systems (ODS) in Richardson, Texas. Another is
Fibermux.
I don't have any specific details, but I'm sure the companies would
be happy to send you information.
   I have a number for ODS of (214) 234-6400.

Be aware that there are interoperability issues with using some of these
devices, and that it may add an order of magnitude to the diagnostic
complexity of your solution.
                        Good luck!
                                             Bob
