I've looked through this file and did not find this information
    available.

What test equipment is required for the certification/repair of the
62.5/125 MM Dual Window Fiber. I just finished watching the 3 DVN
broadcasts, and they mentioned a tester that has been qualified for
internal Field Service, but did NOT give a part number or cost. We will
be installing a small FDDI network here in the Atlanta/CSC and I need
to know what testers the wiring contractor should use for the
certification process. I also plan on purchasing this tester so that we
can do some of our own splicing/connectorization/troubleshooting of the
    Fiber runs in the future.

Give me a call. Here in the Atlanta Area, SSR NWSS contractors on BOA
all are required to have that equipment in hand when doing for for us.
Just step downstairs and ask someone in NWSS about it. We have a set
of the required test equipment in stock, if your sub doesn't.

| Dual Window Optical Loss Test Set, FC-10138-AC, ~$2800
Used for accurately measuring attenuation of fiber cables at both
windows. Required for cableplant certification. Also provides
functionality of Optical Powermeter Kit (described below), with
     addition of a BN24D-01 cable.
     Optical Powermeter Kit, 29-28384-01, ~$500
Used on FDDI devices and the cableplant to isolate link problems.
Strongly recommended for the SDU/branch DSE.

| 305.3 | Fibre Testing | OTOOA::FELDBRUEGGE | Tue Jul 23 1991 16:13 | 25 | |
| Hi!

I've just returned from an internal fibre optics training seminar that
was put on by the Photonics group in Kanata Canada. A major part of the
seminar was about fibre optic attenuation and testing. This section of
the course was delivered by the individual who is writting the fibre
optic test procedures (installed fibre cables) for EIA.

There is more to measuring fibre attenuation than putting a power meter
on the cable and reading the numbers. An example - a correction factor
for the difference in the operating wavelength of the LED light source
of the power metre and the worst case wavelength (in the FDDI spec) of
    the FDDI products LED.

OTDR's should not be used for measuring fibre attenuation (unless the
FDDI hardware will use a LASER source). They can be off by as much as
    3dB.

The DECconnect Fibre Optic Installation manual section 7 contains a
very good fibre test procedure. This section was written by the same
organization that gave the seminar that I attended.
