| 274.1 | Is CDDI an accepted acronym? | FORTSC::TEMPLIN |  | Wed Jun 19 1991 12:59 | 7 |
|  |     I don't have any further information for .0, but I do have a further
    question. Is "CDDI" actually a commonly accepted acronym for "FDDI over
    copper"? I can't recall seeing this acronym used in any Digital
    publications, but I've spoken with customers who have used the term
    extensively. Thanks,

    Fred

|  |     Hi;
         I've seen the term CDDI, as well as the term TPDDI which only
    confuses things, since there are many types of twisted pair, which are
    shielded and unshielded in various ways. The worst I've heard is
    someone saying, "Copper FDDI," what a horrible example of, "double
    speak." Unfortuneately, I am forced to resort to that phrase sometimes.
    Some documents I've seen have ambiguous titles like, "FDDI signaling
    over copper media." Thats good as a title but just try to use that in
    everyday conversation!

         While the phrase CDDI isn't very specific, some ironing out still
    needs to be done by the industry as a whole. I like CDDI, I cast my
    vote for that.
                                                         Jonathan

| | Well, there is the statement that FDDI will be renamed "FAST" DDI.

    Then we can have CFDDI or FFDDI. But it will probably be a real
    political battle with the naming. Something else to waste time on...

|  | Hi
At our recent Networks 91 Exhibition [where we demonstrated CDDI!] Chipcom were
distributing buttons with the phrase TPDDI and it was marked TM [ie. they have
trademarked it].
I guess for this reason we should not use TPDDI!
Cheers
Keith.

| | .3 Well, there is the statement that FDDI will be renamed "FAST" DDI.

    Fast, compared to what ? Signal velocity in copper is higher than in
    fiber. CDDI would then be called TURBO FAST DDI ...
