| | I have heard the same type of comments, especially from people with
interests in syncronous signalling techniques, ( T1, T3 and the like ).

    My comments are usually:

    1.	Fiber is here to stay, why else is all the PTT's replacing fiber
with copper?? Fiber has already happened!!!!

    2. FDDI is unique in that the whole computer industry has adopted the
technology, and products have actually WAITED until all the standards
work was done. This assures a success that will by far surpass
ethernet. There will be no 802.3 vs. ethernet type debate.

    3. Because of the total industry support, competing technologies will
probably have a hard time carving out market share, FDDI will have a
cost advantage over any competing concept to come up. ( There is really
no compettition today, is there ?? ) Maybe other things will come, like
sonet, dqdb, and whatnot, as long as there is no SIGNIFICANT advantage
in speed, throughput, distance the economy of FDDI will be most
    important.

    4.	Sure 1 Gbit or higher speed or technology will come eventually, but
FDDI will still have it's place for a long time. Higher speeds will
    most certainly be fiber though.....

| | Your rebuttals will probably be seen as DEC propaganda no matter what
you say. Get this guy to open up any trade magazine, outside
consultant's editorial, DATApro's articles on the future etc... and let
them win him over for you.

    For example:

" If you work for a Fortune 1000 company, there is FDDI in
your future " - George F. Colony, President of Forrester Research
     		       November, 1988

If the individual is a key player, you might want to pick up his tab
and send him to an industry trade conference on FDDI or Networking.
Get in touch with NAC Marketing or Engineering for a suggestion on a good
    conference.
