| 857.1 | Make the account joint | HANNAH::KOVNER | Everything you know is wrong! | Thu Aug 04 1994 11:35 | 12 |
| | Would it be a problem for you to change to a joint account?
That way, she would also have control over the account.
I can understand WHY they would not let her do anything over the
phone - even if she could PROVE she was your wife, they have no way
of knowing that she is authorized to use the account. If
they allowed things like this, they could have all sorts of
problems in cases when, shall we say, the marriage is less than perfect.
However, there is no excuse for their being rude. A polite
statement that you would have to make the account joint
would be sufficient.

    Kind of stupid if you ask me. I had the same problem with my roomate
    and the phone bill. I would call New England Telephone(now NYNEX) and
    say who I was and wanted information, they would say no, just the phone
    number's owner could ask. Hang up the phone, press redial, and say
    "Hello I'm John Smith I have a problem with my phone" and get all the
    information I wanted. Of course your wife will have to make up a good
    male sounding voice :-).

| 857.3 | it's not an unusual situation | PCBUOA::GIUNTA |  | Fri Aug 05 1994 12:22 | 14 |
| | I've run into this with other banks and have found the only way around
    it is to have everything held jointly. This isn't a big deal on our
    bank accounts [there was only 1 that was his play money - he just added
    my name since I do all the banking/bill-paying], but we don't have any
    joint credit cards. I just make the call and ask them what information
    he will need to call with. Then I have him make the call, or I write a
    letter and have him sign it.

    Another way around it is to give your wife power-of-attorney on that
    particular account. We've used this on my husband's IRA, which
    obviously can't be a joint account, but I'm the one issuing all the
    trade instructions. We just had to fill out a form that the brokerage
    provided. I imagine the DCU or any other institution would have a form
    they want you to use.

    Yup - me and my wife all each have our own accounts - all joint.
