804.0. "Positive feedback that I've been receiving" by SMAUG::GARROD (DCU Board of Directors Candidate) Thu Mar 31 1994 22:28

Lately as I've been campaigning during my lunch break for the DCU board
I have been very heartened at the postive response I get from the vast
majority of DCU members. It seems that the philosophy of no punitive
fees and the back to basics approach that Phil, Chris and myself
    espouse is what people want.

I'd like to share with everybody a couple of mail messages I have
received. I asked both of the authors whether I could post these
anonymously, both gave their permission. My gut feeling is that a lot
of the membership has similar views.

804.1Fed up with the attacks on the membershipSMAUG::GARRODDCU Board of Directors CandidateThu Mar 31 1994 22:3023

I will stay a member just long enough to vote for you, but I've had it with this
credit union. I'm moving my savings to another credit union, because of the
checking fee, and the shortsighted policies of the current board. I've talked
to the people at the credit union office in Colorado Springs and back East, and
all they can do is defend the current policy.

I closed my checking account, since it was only used to transfer money from my
savings to my checking account when I needed it.

The credit union does not seem to care that you support the credit union by
depositing a weekly amount into savings that exceeds the amount they currently
require for checking. I would think that money in savings would be more likely
to stay in savings, than money in a checking account, and would therefore
provide a more stable base for loans.

Going through this attack on it's membership twice in the last several years is
enough for me to know they do not value my support as a credit union member.

Wish you the best in the election.

804.2In favor of root valuesSMAUG::GARRODDCU Board of Directors CandidateThu Mar 31 1994 22:3163

BRAVO, David!

Thank you for putting action behind conviction and running for election to the
DCU Board of Directors. Phil Gransewicz has been a "voice crying in the
wilderness" for too long! I will support ANYONE who will commit to the
membership to return the DCU to its root values and eliminate a caste system
which perpetuates reward to the rich and buries those least able to tolerate
incriminate costs!

My personal opinion is that those with enough money to be "above" the
current fee system are not usually interested in maintaining membership for
the greater good of the credit union, they merely want to increase their own
wealth. They will pull their deposits without a second thought if there is
more money to be made (and better tax shelter) elsewhere. The DCU is only
a stop-over in their greater financial journey.

Those of us caught in the economic trap created by the insanity of the 80s
are dangerously close to self-annihilation! We stay with the DCU because it
is the ONLY place we can get a break and possibly begin to come out from under
our financial distress. The more they make it possible for us to survive, the
more business we return. I originally had only a savings account to accommodate
direct deposit. I now also have a checking account with an attached credit
line, a car loan, and a savings account in trust for my daughter.

I would transfer my VISA balance, if I could get approval. If I am paying on
time to another bank that has no problem with my credit record and I am willing
to have my payments payroll deducted, why is there a problem with "risk
ratios"? I've already BEEN paying regularly on an established account
which I'm closing to transfer the balance and provide the DCU with additional
funds from interest collection?

I would even like to get another loan (car or personal) to buy a second, used
car for my daughter. But no one will talk to me about a creative approach to
"making things happen" if I don't fit into the little ratio box. What good is
an excellent credit record, if ratio is the deciding factor? Doesn't it stand
to reason that I might be a better credit risk at 40% ratio with a 25 year
history of always paying my bills, than someone at 30% with a history of
defaults?

This is all business I am willing to and want to do with the DCU because I know
by supporting it, I support myself. I truly believe in the principles of the
credit union. But, I find that before my very eyes, those who have promised
otherwise, have changed MY credit union into the bank I DIDN'T choose or want!
AND have become as inaccessible!!

You probably got more than you bargained for with this response and don't
even have time to read such a lengthy one, but I was inspired by your message
and the congregate belief statement because it has been a long time coming. I
hesitate to again BELIEVE that those in a position to become DCU Directors can
and will do what they promise in returning the DCU to its basic principles.
But I AM a believer, because that IS what being a DCU member is all about; and
it's that inordinate belief system which created the DCU in the first place!

Thank you for caring enough to represent the greater good and good luck. I
will be supporting you, Chris Fillmore-Gillett, and Phil Gransewicz with MY
vote, for what it's worth, and will encourage others to do the same.

Best regards,

xxx
