Just spoke with the JY15 folks and they are having a recall of sort
on early JY15s. Seems that there was some kind of problem with the
plastic used in the boats. Several boats from Florida and other
Southern states are peeling. They claim that the peeling does not
impact the strength of the hulls but is still not correct. Folks with
boats form 90, 91, and some 92's did not get the cutoff number can
trade their boats in for a new boat for a cost of $400.
They are offering the older boats to community sailing programs at
a relatively low cost. They announced a sale on factory reconditioned
boats for $2100 in a recent community sailing news letter. I was
curious about the deal and called to see what the story is. They told
me about the recall and what the current restrictions on buying used
boats is. If they cannot sell off all the boats they get back to
community programs they may consider lowering the price to community
programs, or selling the to individuals who are willing to accept them
as is with no warranty. I managed to convince to sell me one as long
as I promise to demonstrate it the community program where I sail. Now
to decide if I want to part with the $$$$$.

I took them up on the deal and the price was $2000 exactly. The
boat is a relatively early one hull number 341 and it looks like it was
used fairly hard but overall in good shape. I have some cleaning to
do, and a other small items to bring it up to my desired standards.
But I am a real perfectionists when it comes to a boats fit and finish.
I also learned what the boats really cost to build vs the suggest
retail price. The retail price is slightly more than 2 times the
builders cost. With what they are selling the recalled boats for plus
the charge for returning a boat they are breaking even on the
replacement boat. I even managed to sneak in a sail today.....

Ps. If anyone is interested in a buying one, the factory is
getting more back than they can place at community sailing
programs. They are now willing to let them go first come
first served to anyone who calls and asks. The number is
1-800-JY15 ask for Paul Raffa.....
