| 1300.1 | Can you wait two weeks? | CSSE::COUTURE | Abandon shore | Mon Aug 07 1989 11:00 | 16 |
| | It all depends on what sort of sailing products you're looking for.
The best assortment of hardware, resins, paint, fasteners, fittings,
etc. is across the Newport Bridge in Jamestown. It's called Jamestown
Distributors and it serves the boatbuilding industry, but also sells
    retail.

There's a great bookstore (the Armchair Sailor) off Thames Street in
the cluster of shops south of The Treadway Inn - which would be a
good place to stay to be close to the "action".

If you can switch your dates, you might want to consider waiting
until Sept. 7-10 when the Newport International Sailboat Show
will fill your heart and empty your wallet.

| | I do believe the Newport Jazz Festival is the week you're planning to
be there (I know it starts on the 19th, I just don't know how long it
runs). If this is the case you may have a problem finding a place to
stay in town. Best to call ahead now and find out.

Unfortunately I cannot change the schedule, it would be great if
I could and stay for the International Sailboat. For this time the
American's Cup "homewaters" will be very nice for two days only.

The sailing products it's really small hardware pieces (ring buoy,
hose clamps, snaps..), a solar charger and fan, inspection port
and deck plates and if would be money a speedometer and log (sonic
one) and the mainsheet traveller. The bookstore ok, great !

As Bob said at reply .2, migth be on a Jazz Festival and I did not
book any place, if you could send the telex/fax or phone nr from The
Treadway Inn will be excellent, so everything would be set in advance.

I forgot, if there will be a Volvo Penta in Newport I need some parts
    too.

    Thanks and nice winds.	Fernando.

| | I am not familiar with Newport's other chandlerys but Jamestown
Distributors gets my vote also. They have excellent prices but
unfortunately are limited in selection. Anything they don't have
I'm sure they will be more than glad to help you find elsewhere
    at the best prices...

The Volvo Penta dealership in Newport is:

    				Williams and Manchester Inc
    				Lee's Wharf
    				Newport R.I.
    				(401) 864-0725

You will also be able to find other sources of Marine Supplies in
the "Yellow Pages" when you get to Newport.

    Have a good time

    in Portsmouth I believe.

| 1300.7 | Sailboat rentals in Newport? | ORACLE::MARKS |  | Thu Aug 31 1989 10:52 | 10 |
| | Hello Sailors.
I'm also in need of some info on Newport. I don't have a boat (just took
up sailing this summer) but I'm going down to Newport for a few days in
late Sept and I wondered if it was possible to rent a daysailer somewhere in
    the area??

     Thanks!

    sailboats for hourly rental.
