810.0. "Any caulking experts?" by USSCSL::GERMAIN () Mon Apr 25 1988 09:49
Any wooden boat caulking experts out there?
I have a few questions:
1) how do you decide the thickness of the strand? I have 3/4" inch
cedar on oak.
2) how far do you drive the cotton in?
I read 3/4 of the way down.
3) I read where if you are going to seal with an elastomeric (3M
5200?), you don't drive the cotton in as tight.
Any thoughts?
4) Where the garboard meets the keel is a gap about 1/4" (the previous
owner always removed the caulking from this seam after the boat
was pulled), does this need to be shrunk (wetting the planks) before
caulking? Do I use a larger strand?
5)Curiosity question: why are caulking hammers shaped the way they
are?
6) How do you choose the size of the making iron?
I need to learn about this, so any expert advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Gregg
