| The Boston Globe printed the plot today, but I still say there's
a story there. Rumors abound; anyone heard the story from one of
the the participants?
Imagine if he'd been running for president!

| I look forward to seeing all the facts on this incredible cruising
mystery. He is most likely the first
person ever to go aground in a rain storm near the Vinyard late at
night and be mistaken as to his position. If SAIL doesn't pick
this up as an exclusive, perhaps the INQUIRER would want a go at
it.

Well I have some inside poop on the whole story. One of the
kids who I use to teach sailing to is now an assistant harbor master
for Barnstable MA. On the day before the infamous voyage the Senator's
boat accidentally jibed and knocked two people overboard, cracking one
persons ribs. She had to go out and pull both of them out of the
water.
The next day she hears a distress call from the Senator saying
that his boat was on the rocks near Colliers Ledge by Hyannisport.
She and two Coast Guard boats went to Colliers but found nothing.
While the Coast Guard was talking to the Senator it became clear
that he had no idea where he was. While people were searching off
of Hyannisport the Senator managed to get his boat into Falmouth
Harbor! He wasn't even near Hyannisport. It was a fairly serious
situation, there were a lot of inexperienced people out there and
the hole is BIG. If you are really curious you can take a look
at the boat in Hyannis Marine. I'm amazed that a boat that size
didn't have a $699 LORAN onboard. Rumor around
the Cape is that the people on the boat were in the bottle.
I was a little surprised by all of this because the Senator is
a good sailor. I've crewed on the Wianno Senior fleet races against
him and have respect for his ability. If you want to here some
Kennedy sailing horror stories, I'll tell you about Eunice Shriver!
She is a one woman wrecking crew.
Once when I was 16 I was racing my Beetle Cat in the Hyannis
Regatta. It was blowing 15-20 and the harbor was crowded with little
kids in Beetle Cats trying to stay afloat. One boat tipped over
and was waiting for assistance when Eunice came sailing by with
her floating party and decided to help. She came at the swamped
boat on a broad reach, moving a a good clip. The kids couldn't
believe it she was heading right at them. As they swam away for
their lives Eunice runs *right over* the Beetle Cat leaving a tangle
of ripped sail and broken planks. She said nothing, and just threw
the kids a life jacket. The kids were terrified, but she did pick
up the repair bill.
