| 410.1 | Great Bay Marine Cost Example | PUNDIT::MCWILLIAMS |  | Mon Sep 29 1986 14:59 | 25 |
|  |
     See Note 197.1 for the fees for Great Bay Marine. I believe one
     might find it on the same order. I don't know if there are any
     sales taxes on Mass hauling.
     Example: 25 Ft LOA 8 Ft BEAM = 200 sq Ft
               Parker River
                            Storage --> $2.00/sq Ft @ 200 Sq Ft = $400.00
                            Bottom Wash $1.50/Ft @ 25 Ft LOA    = $ 37.50
                                                                  -------
                                                     Total      = $437.50
               Great Bay Marine
                            Storage --> $18.50/Ft LOA @ 25 Ft   = $462.50
                            Bottom Wash Included                =    0.00
                                                                  -------
                                                     Total      = $462.50
     If you don't live in the North Shore/Southern NH area the
     inconvenience of trucking up to Portsmouth/Newington might make this
     seem less attractive.

    It's time to start my search for jack stands (the boat was on a
    yard cradle last year). Can anyone suggest places to purchase stands
    other than the one in 410.0? How are prices / availability /
    longevity?

    Also, so we'll have something to kick around, are there any good
    ground-rules for how far apart to place jack-stands?

    Thanks,
    Carl

Yup, more is better. Observing boatyard practice seems to indicate about
three pairs of stands is about right for a 30' boat. We use seven for
our 32' boat -- the seventh is under the bow. Be a mite careful about
putting fin keel boats on stands. As I recall, the owner's manual for
our C&C 26 said not to allow more than 30% of the boat's weight to rest
on the keel. Jack stands are not supposed to support the boat -- they
should provide just enough pressure to keep the boat from falling over
(see the current issue of Wooden Boat).

They use Billy'ons and Billy'ons of jackstands and love to sell them too.

| 410.5 | New yard on the Annisquam | CDR::SPENCER | John Spencer | Fri Aug 18 1989 18:39 | 23 |
| | Montgomery's Boatyard on the Annisquam River in Gloucester has recently
been leased to a couple local guys who are now operating as River
Boatworks. I've known one of the partners, Mark Sheldon, for nearly 20
years, and can testify to his character, honesty and motivation.
As some of you may know, access to the yard is tidal, but that's not a
problem for winter storage (outside only!). Though prices are finalized
yet, it's likely to be among the least expensive places around, simply
because it's a dirt lot with only the basic services: water by hose, and
electricity if you bring your own cords. Besides hauling (with either a
truly unique travel-lift last in service at Story's Yard in Essex, or a
Brownell trailer), they will clean the bottom and will do the covering.
The rest all can be done by owners or others. No engine work. Sailboats
appreciated most; cigarette-type powerboats not really welcome, though
there's little chance the facilities will attract them!
So, if you're interested in a low-key alternative yard for the winter,
call Mark at 546-2723. That's his home number, so it would be nice to
check and see if the River Boatworks number is listed before you try the
home line.

Should be a good place.

    Thanks,
