SUMMER YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES 1994
The following is a listing I have gathered about summer educational
programs in Norway or about Norwegian language. I do not have
up-to-date information about the University of Bergen's course for
foreign students (3 weeks long), so perhaps some other reader can
provide it. Also I would appreciate hearing about other programs I
may have missed.

NEW PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT: Norwegian Nature and Culture
Scandinavian Seminar is pleased to announce our newest international
program at Telemark College in B, Norway.
Norwegian Nature and Culture is an English language program focusing on
the interaction of society with their environment from a Scandinavian
perspective. The method of study is interdisciplinary, enhanced
through firsthand experience with Norwegians and Norway's natural
environment and cultural heritage. Among the issues studied are the
ways in which human culture and activities affect the environment. At
the same time, students will consider how natural surroundings
influence the development of cultural traditionidentity. Such
influences have been strong in Norway and may be traced through the
various regions of the country: the coast, the mountains, the cities
and the countryside.
The program will include extensive field studies of about 20 days per
semester. The program is limited to approximately 35 college students
primarily from Norway, other European countries, and North America. The
program has been designed for undergraduate students from a variety of
academic majors as part of their Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of
Science degrees, and is particularly oriented toward students
interested in environmental studies, environmental management,
geography, Scandinavian Studies, and the humanities and cultural
studies. Students will live in Telemark student apartments The program
is partially subsidized by the Norwegian government. Tuition,
including costs of the field studies is $2,900 per semester.
Telemark College is located in the city of B, Norway, a commercial
center for the Telemark District, 180 kilometers from Oslo. B and
Telemark College provide a modern and dynamic environment while
retaining the atmosphere of a small college. Telemark College is a
degree-granting institution offering the equivalent of an American
undergraduate degree. The college has an international reputation in
research and development on environmental issues.

The "Opportunities in Norden" web page, featuring study, work, and
volunteer programs in the Nordic countries, has undergone a major
upgrade. Phone and/email contacts have been added when available. The
page is mainly geared toward Americans seeking experiences abroad, but
many of the programs accept participants from all over the world. New
and improved country pages now exist and the pages include both long
and short term academic study, work, internship, volunteer programs and
programs for high school students. Please feel free to drop in and take
